I know that being wheelers some people carry breakage prone parts
with them.

some just keep a gallon of coolant and a few quarts of oil, but just how far do you go, how much thought do you put into what to carry with you?

Personally I have several emergency kits, not all of them carried
with me all the time, infact I keep a bottle of P/S fluid and a bottle
of brake fluid under the hood and a few quarts of oil and a gallon of premix antifreeze in the bed when I'm in the local area. and I won't even drive around the block without a 2gallon can of gas in the bed.

for PACKAGING my spares I discovered that a Sunkist Orange
box fits snugly inside a Milk crate and contains things nicely.

My kits are:
1) Fluids kit, which has:
a)1gallon jug plus two quarts of oil (5W-30)
and a filter (Motorcraft FL-1A)
b)2gallons of Anti-Freeze, NOT the "premixed type".
c)2quarts of Type F tranny fluid (Power steering)
d)two bottles of Silicone brake fluid

2)Engine bay spares:
a)spare (130A) alternator
b)starter motor
c)serpentine belt
d)Belt tensioner assembly and idler pulley
e)HP power steering line
f)fan clutch
g)Coil pack
h)EDIS6 Ignition Module
i)PCM

And I'm seriously considering adding a power steering pump
(mounted to a bracket) to this kit.

I have other "pre-packaged Kits" that I may load in on trips,
the further I'm going the more my spares supply broadens...

I used to carry a few lengths of brake line and a flaring kit in
my roadtrip toolbox, but I have removed them since I replaced
all my rigid lines with stainless steel.

I also carry some stuff I know to be "odd" like a spare left front
brake line, because I have retrofitted the two-piston brakes onto
my truck and ONLY 1997 were made with those brakes and WITHOUT ABS.
Most auto parts stock the ABS line but the Non-ABS line is usually special order... (I've had to wait two days for both of my lines)

I'd be real pissed if something broke far from home and I had to
buy (on the road) something I already had at home.

Other spares I avoid carrying by replacing certain parts
before a trip, for example I usually replace all
my brake linings two weeks before a road trip.
(I prefer having time to bed-in new pads)
I repack my front wheel bearings
and clean my hubs.

But I still carry a stub, rotor, bearings
and a spare hub (w/hardware) with me on anything other than
a "local" trip (within a 100mile radius of home)
I replace all the fluids a week before etc.

On any trip outside the local area (greater than 100miles)
I carry TWO spare tires.

However I also have a selection of spare parts "pre-positioned"
at some frequently visited locations, For example I have a pair of axle
shafts, fuel pumps and a second "engine bay emergency kit"
and some other stuff (ammounting to about three milk crates
of RBV "Treasure") at my brother's place in Wyoming.
And I usually have other spares prepackaged sitting at home
(in the back of my van) ready to be shipped to me wherever
I am. Not that I expect to need them, but the fact that I have
those parts ready for someone to ship to me pretty much
guarandamntees I will NOT need them.

But tell everyone about your emergency supplies

How paranoid are you?

Are you paranoid enough?

Am I making you MORE paranoid? (LOL)

I carry a spare tire, I've got a spare alternator, and hub also. Fluids I usually keep a 4L of coolant (Mixed), Dot3 brake fluid, Motor oil, and relays and fuses.

That's the everyday things. If I know I'm going out on the trail I'll take more things that could go bad naturally.

I don't carry anything except a spare tire. And even that I've never had to use.

d)two bottles of Silicone brake fluid
Why silicone fluid? Doesn't your truck use DOT 3?

Allan, given where you go, carry DRINKING WATER.

Even on the highway. At least 1 gal per person per day. Much more if it's hot as Hell.

In my F-150 I have a spare tire, a jack, a couple socket sets... used the spare tire once in three years to go 2 miles from a restaurant. I have used the socket sets many times but knocking on wood never on the truck. I do keep a couple quarts of tranny fluid and engine oil (5W-20 Motorcraft) in the toolbox.

Ranger has an assortment of tools and that is about it. Due to its ravonous appitite for it I keep a couple quarts of oil and a couple quarts of tranny fluid on board and a case of oil beside its berth in the shed. It also has a spare tire and a set of snow chains (go figure I have a set of chains for the most aggresive tires I own, and I don't drive it in the snow) I got them for free out of a friends demo car, brand new and never used.

Farmhouses are pretty frequent along where I drive, and with a cell (and a CB in the F-150) I am pretty sure I could get help if I need it, I have never felt the need to drag a parts truck along "just in case". If I was going on a hardcore wheeling trip I would take a set of axle shafts and hubs, starter... but after 8 years of ownership, my D28 has all of the breakable parts intact from when I got it.

I carry a lot of stuff. I have been dubbed the "rolling NAPA" truck. It is rare I break something adn can't fix it on the trail. Oddly enough my spares are used by others more often than myself. I hate breaking stuff on the trail!

I don't carry a lot but I have my share of stuff. Got a truck bed mounted toolbox and filled it up with the basics. Got screwdrivers, small set of wrenches (metric and standard) plus a couple of adjustable wrenches. Bent tip needle nose pliers, sidecutters and locking pliers. Wire strippers. Zip ties, bailing wire and duct tape. Manual hub socket with can of grease. Bungee cords. Bolt breaker and easy out set. Jumper cables. Rubber mallet (comes in handy more than you think). A small first aid kit with band-aids, hydrogen peroxide, medical tape, ace bandages and rubber gloves. D-ring shackle and recovery strap (never know when someone will be stuck). Also carry a tarp, paper towel roll and shop rags. Still have the stock roadside recovery jack and lug nut wrench, though the spare tire is too small to use, just adds weight. Guess that's about it. Need to get fluids in there but I'm afraid about them heating up in this Florida sun, expanding in their plastic containers and leaking everywhere. There's always more tools or parts that I can think of but am running out of room.

Pretty much set for a roadside save. Hopefully not my own.

No, I prefer DOT5 and I have the time & patience to purge all the
air from it.

Allan, given where you go, carry DRINKING WATER.

MAKG, I was refering to truck and offroad stuff.
What I carry as far as food and water would make
some people wonder... but is a seperate discussion especially
since that loadout changes on the specific trip, planned routing
and time of year.

But on anything other than a local trip (<100miles)
the first container of water to go into the truck is
a case of Poland Spring (24-500ml bottles)
but there's already a six pack of Panna water
behind the drivers seat. (poland spring bottles are too
crunchable to have in the cab unprotected except for immediate use)

The Rifle I usually have when going beyond "local" would make
them wonder more:)

My Minimum ammount of communications gear on a long trip is
also another discussion.

And you KNOW about my thoughts on fuel:)

I carry coolant, power steering fluid, couple quarts of oil, and brake fluid. I also have a spare gas cap, some lug nuts, and a fan belt.

I carry a spare tire in my DD, but usually not if I'm driving my trail rig. When I picked up my 32's I could only find four tires and they're hard as hell to purchase used. When I get a decent set of tires I will get a spare, though.

Love Thy Neighbor
I think I started a similar thread a while back and got plenty of responses...but I used to carry spare alt, vac line, plugs, fuel, oil, oink, a shovel, jumper cables, full tool set, two jacks, a jill and a bucket in case there's a hill...

AllanD: It's better to be prepared than paranoid or somewhere without something you need...oh, and I always carry a winter coat (waterproof that doubles as raincoat), umbrella, and winter boots (in the cold weather), a cell phone, and usually some of those waterproof/windproof pants...and a thermal blanket...and candles with metal holders...

For big trips, I usually carry my essential tools, fluids (Mercon, 5w30 oil, coolant, and sometimes gear oil). I also carry spark plugs, a camshaft synchro (no other place to put it atm), a vacuum hublock (just in case), and of course a spare tire.

well, since I hardly ever work on my truck at home I carry most of my tools with me everywhere. Keep in mind that I have an engine drive air compressor. I usually carry the following;

full set of metric and standard combination wrenches
adjustable wrenches
several pairs of pliers and channel locks
several pairs of vice grips
a few hammers
a cheap impact wrench
an air drill and bit set
an air hammer with assorted punches and chisels
a decent assortment of 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 sockets, wrenches, and breaker bars
a soldering gun, solder and heatshrink tubing
a set of shallow standard impact sockets
an assortment of screwdrivers
a pick set
a manual hub socket
2 pairs of tin snips
wire strippers
wire (electrical and bailing)
tfi module tool
punches
25' air hose
4 way tire valve tool
tire plugging kit
metric and standard allen wrenches
a magnetic pickup tool (magnet on a stick)
a small assortment of nuts bolts and screws
a tire chuck
20' snatch strap
20' transport chain
a spare 3/4 inch "d" ring
a digital multimeter
a torque wrench
a 1.5 ton hydraulic jack
a 48" hilift
a shovel
a good set of jumper cables
a spare tire
a fire extinguisher
a 3 battery maglite
a 400 watt power inverter
scissors
a razor scraper
a soldering iron, heat shrink tubing, and solder
a clutch line disconnect tool
a fuel line disconnect tool
snap-ring pliers
wire ties
a ratchet offset
torx bits
bolt cutters
fuses (all sizes)

Fluids and solvents;
a quart of brake fluid
a gallon of antifreeze (premixed)
a quart of oil
a quart of atf (power steering & transfercase)
a can of wd 40
a can of carb & choke cleaner
a can of brake cleaner

stuff I should have but don't;
a spare spark plug and wire long enough to fit any cylinder
a spare set of d28 shafts
a length of brake line and fittings + flare tool
a few hose clamps
a chunk of inner tube and rubber cement
a length of fuel hose
a locking hub
a set of front wheel bearings
a belt for the compressor and alternator (I can live without power steering)
spare bulbs
a hacksaw

I carry all of these tools with me because if I leave them at my house they disappear + it saves time and gas when I don't need to go home to get something I need to finish something I'm doing.
