I know that being wheelers some people carry breakage prone parts
with them.
some just keep a gallon of coolant and a few quarts of oil, but just how far do you go, how much thought do you put into what to carry with you?
Personally I have several emergency kits, not all of them carried
with me all the time, infact I keep a bottle of P/S fluid and a bottle
of brake fluid under the hood and a few quarts of oil and a gallon of premix antifreeze in the bed when I'm in the local area. and I won't even drive around the block without a 2gallon can of gas in the bed.
for PACKAGING my spares I discovered that a Sunkist Orange
box fits snugly inside a Milk crate and contains things nicely.
My kits are:
1) Fluids kit, which has:
a)1gallon jug plus two quarts of oil (5W-30)
and a filter (Motorcraft FL-1A)
b)2gallons of Anti-Freeze, NOT the "premixed type".
c)2quarts of Type F tranny fluid (Power steering)
d)two bottles of Silicone brake fluid
2)Engine bay spares:
a)spare (130A) alternator
b)starter motor
c)serpentine belt
d)Belt tensioner assembly and idler pulley
e)HP power steering line
f)fan clutch
g)Coil pack
h)EDIS6 Ignition Module
i)PCM
And I'm seriously considering adding a power steering pump
(mounted to a bracket) to this kit.
I have other "pre-packaged Kits" that I may load in on trips,
the further I'm going the more my spares supply broadens...
I used to carry a few lengths of brake line and a flaring kit in
my roadtrip toolbox, but I have removed them since I replaced
all my rigid lines with stainless steel.
I also carry some stuff I know to be "odd" like a spare left front
brake line, because I have retrofitted the two-piston brakes onto
my truck and ONLY 1997 were made with those brakes and WITHOUT ABS.
Most auto parts stock the ABS line but the Non-ABS line is usually special order... (I've had to wait two days for both of my lines)
I'd be real pissed if something broke far from home and I had to
buy (on the road) something I already had at home.
Other spares I avoid carrying by replacing certain parts
before a trip, for example I usually replace all
my brake linings two weeks before a road trip.
(I prefer having time to bed-in new pads)
I repack my front wheel bearings
and clean my hubs.
But I still carry a stub, rotor, bearings
and a spare hub (w/hardware) with me on anything other than
a "local" trip (within a 100mile radius of home)
I replace all the fluids a week before etc.
On any trip outside the local area (greater than 100miles)
I carry TWO spare tires.
However I also have a selection of spare parts "pre-positioned"
at some frequently visited locations, For example I have a pair of axle
shafts, fuel pumps and a second "engine bay emergency kit"
and some other stuff (ammounting to about three milk crates
of RBV "Treasure") at my brother's place in Wyoming.
And I usually have other spares prepackaged sitting at home
(in the back of my van) ready to be shipped to me wherever
I am. Not that I expect to need them, but the fact that I have
those parts ready for someone to ship to me pretty much
guarandamntees I will NOT need them.
But tell everyone about your emergency supplies
How paranoid are you?
Are you paranoid enough?
Am I making you MORE paranoid? (LOL)
