I just pulled out the original 2.3 4cyl out of my 86 ranger. I need to know what engine will fit besides the original. Having a hard time finding the original so anything that will plug and play pretty much is what I need . I found a merkur turbo engine but it seemed a hassle at the time. Need it to bolt up to my exsisting tranny. It is 4x4 and would like to keep it that way. Really appreciate the help guys thanks

Here is a list pulled directly from O'Reillys website of the compatible makes and models for an engine - long block.

It might be possible to use a later 2.3 short block with your head if it's still good. It probably depends on when they stopped cutting holes for the distributor to bolt in. Someone here should be able to tell you for sure.

It may sound silly, but the question becomes what do you want?
There's an article about the engine somewhere around here, but basically the Lima has been used by Ford US since the 70s in basically everything rear wheel drive with a four cylinder. The biggest changes came in the late eighties with the addition of electronic ignition and fuel injection to the 2.3. There's also an under bored 2.0 version (sadly what mine has), and a stroked 2.5 version.
