Hi, I have a 1984 Ranger with the Toyo Kogyo TK4 manual transmission and was wondering how much power the transmission can take stock. Thanks, Lucas.

I don't know if there are any published figures out there. They were made to go behind the 4 cylinders and anemic 2.8's from that era... so they are pretty light duty in any case. You could probably get away with a fair bit more power than stock if you're just driving it around town, but as with any manual, abuse will shorten its lifespan quickly, IE racing, offroad, etc

I wouldnt go much above what an OHV 4.0 puts out stock. And thats only if youre nice to it.

Whats your plans?

I want to swap a 302 into it, and was hoping I could save a litte money on the transmission.

No - definitely DON'T do that. Too many better options that will save you money in the long run vs buying an adapter to use a weak, rare, 35 year old 4 speed transmission.

Yeah, don't do that. You could buy a suitable transmission for the price you'll spend on the adapter to use your 4 speed.

If you do use it, please, please mount a go pro under the trans tunnel first time you do a 4000rpm clutch drop...please.

Just kidding.

No, i wouldnt trust any 80s era RBV trans behind even a choked out emission 302.

If you want to stay manual look for a mazda M5OD, or, if you dont care about O/D any of the old standby 4speeds should be adaptable to your application.

If you go automatic, a C4 is your best bet.
