What is the fuel canister called on the frame rail around the driver's side seating area? Not the fuel filter but farther back. 2 fuel lines come off the back side to the tank, 1 fuel line comes out the front to the engine.

I keep smelling fuel and crawled under it today and noticed fuel seepage out of that canister. What all is involved in replacing that? Any alternatives? I figured by the looks of it that the bottom would unscrew, but I couldn't get it to budge so I assume that its just a fuel reservoir to provide a burst of fuel on hard acceleration? Any place to get a replacement, or repair, etc?

That black 2 piece canister assembly is called a fuel accumulator. It provides fuel storage in case the vehicle is tilted at an angle.
The bottom housing unscrews to access the paper filter inside. There is an o ring that goes on the inside of the part that unscrews. It helps to put a little grease on the o ring when reassembling it to hold it in place. It is real easy to pinch it. Napa has the paper fuel filter and o ring together in a kit. Try using a strap wrench to break it loose. When reassembling it use paraffin or candle wax on the threads to help it unscrew next time.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to get it apart tomorrow. I've never had it apart since I've had it and it just started leaking so wondering why all of a sudden its leaking. I couldn't get it to unscrew by hand, and I seem to recall seeing something here on the TRS forum about that canister not having anything in it after a certain year. I'll see if I can get it apart and figure out what's causing it to leak. Maybe the o-ring is deteriorated and causing the leak, then comes the problem of repairing it LOL.

Most likely it is the oring. You can remove the assembly to make it easier to service. My Bronco II is a 1988 and has the filter inside of it.

Thanks, I'll see what I can do, I don't want to attempt to remove it as it has weird fuel line connectors on it which I don't have a tool for. If it has a filter in it I'll see about changing that filter as well when I get it apart. Wonder where I could find an o-ring and filter?

NAPA has the fuel filter and oring as a kit.

The bottom housing does not unscrew on all of them, only early ones. I have owned four RBVs with that unit and none of them unscrewed. All were eighty-seven or eighty-eight and my number keys have stopped working.

So what would be causing it to leak all of a sudden? I haven't bothered messing with it as its my only vehicle and it runs so I'm not messing with it until I am 100% certain of a fix.

It looks as though the bottom part would unscrew from the top where the fuel lines enter and exit. As its leaking between the 2 pieces. Not very much because it never leaves any sign of a leak on the ground, you can smell it and you can see evidence of a leak but never any on the ground.

The leak most likely is a dry oring. It doesn't sound like you have the 1 piece version. Buy the new cartridge filter and oring. You can loosen the housing mounting bolts to gain a little more room to unscrew the canister. It could take some good pressure to turn it loose. Mine had varnish built up where the 2 pieces meet, and gas seeped out over the years. I had to hold the rubber strap wrench tight awhile before it finally loosened.
Go to Ebay and type in this auction number in the search box.
#15260010231 You can see what it looks like. There are interchange numbers listed also.

I think that is what has happened with mine, its just dried out from age. I'll try and get stuff on my day off to get it repaired. Seems like a pretty simple repair once you get the thing apart HAHA!!!.

Wouldn't surprise me if its never been opened up. I guess I'll also take the opportunity since I'll be in that area to install a new fuel filter along with the filter in that canister.

It would be a good idea to get at least 4 of the white plastic clips that lock on the plastic fuel line connectors, in case you need to remove the accumulator to replace the filter. Don't reuse the old plastic clips. You can get a pack of 10 on Ebay FOR $4.15 with free shipping. Ebay#301677499163
The inline metal canister fuel filter by the drivers front frame should come with 2 new plastic clips.

Thanks, I found the kit on ebay with a filter and o-ring, I'll order those clips just in case. If that does in fact have the filter inside it, I imagine if its the original filter it may be a little on the dirty side HAHA!!! I hope this is one of those cases where its a simple fix that doesn't turn into a whole day/weekend project LOL.

You can find those clips in most auto-parts stores in the "HELP" section. I just bought some. There was two sizes so I bought both. I think the smaller size would be for the fuel return line.

Visited the local pick a part this morning. Ironically they had 2 different bronco 2's. They had an 86 which had the reservoir that doesn't come apart, they had an 88 (same year as mine) which the reservoir comes apart, neither was in very good condition so I didn't bother pulling one off.

I ordered the o-ring kit and filter so as soon as it gets here I'll get it replaced.
