I'm about 99% sure my tranny in my truck is about to pass on to a better life.
On trips on the hwy to and from work, aprox 30mins, the shifter becomes very hard to move out of gear and nearly impossible to put in to another. With the truck pulled over on the shoulder I can then move the shifter, but the tranny seems to be stuck in 5th. Even when the shifter is in neutral the tranny is still in 5th. After the trucks sits and cools for a couple hours I can then select the gear I want again. The fluid was at the right level, but has a real nice burnt smell to it. I've put new tranny fluid in since praying for a miracle, but I've still got a growly tranny that I don't trust at all.

On to the good news,.... I hope. My step father is about to scrap his 93 2wd ranger with a 3.0L. The tech section here says they both have the same tranny, but with different ratios in first and second. ( I would like the lower gear anyway, I always thought mine was too tall.)
My question is, is it as simple as swapping the tail stock and output shaft from my tranny on to the 2wd one? If so, how far in to the tranny do I need to go to get the out put shaft out?
Any advice or help would be great, exploded diagrams a big bonus...

Travis..

you basically have to take the entire transmission apart to get the output shaft out.

Top cover, front bearing/seal retainer, extension housing, rear bearing retainer, input shaft, then the output shaft comes out. There's some gear pulling involved in there too, it's been awhile since I've been into one but I remember the output shaft was the second to last thing in the whole transmission to come out. The very last was the countershaft, which is little more than laying in the bottom of the housing once the output shaft is out.

What engine do you have? If it's a 4.0 then the 3.0 transmission will NOT bolt up to the engine.

Anyone know of a place to buy rebuilt tranny's in Ontario Canada?
Or online if the place has a good reputation and price is decent?
