So yeah, awhile back I broke the rear drive shaft seal on my 87 bii. Where the drive shaft slips into itself. Can I fix this myself? Do I need a drive shaft shop? Or just a new drive shaft?

I was gonna leave it alone until I got back from bootcamp, but my shipping date got pushed back to december. The rattling and banging noises are killing me. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

How exactly did you break it? A pic might help...

Those slip yokes do wear out, could it just be that? How much play does it have?

I went to a 3day trail ride, and on the way home I noticed a vibration. The next day the vibration turned into banging and thumping noises.

the slip has a lot of play in it in all directions. If it has just worn out, is there a way to fix it? I tried to re-grease it a week ago, but the grease just started to ooze through the seal.

I'd prolly have it re-built. That's just me though. I've dealt with a guy in Harrisburg that has done some excellent drive shaft work for me for very good prices and usually done before he says it will be.

That's a bit far for you though.

Find another driveline or take it to a driveline shop and have the slip yoke replaced. It is probably worn out beyond repair if it's that bad. The front driveline in my Ranger is the same way. You should plan on getting this fixed ASAP so you don't destroy the pinion bearing in your rear axle among other things.
