hey guys, i got a question about my oil pressure sensor.

the other day the light my blinking, i know they stay solid when a problem is present. it only does this blinking thing when at idle, as soon as i hit the gas it stops. i have it unhooked and the light isnt on.

now should the light be on because it isnt picking up a signal, or do i have a problem. lol help me understand how this one works. please and thank you.

Oil level first, then see if a new oil press sensor is needed. My fluctuated at idle only, when driving it pumped fine... Durr, gas is pressed. Lol

How does the gauge look? Does it fluctuate?

oil level is where it needs to be.

why isnt the light on when the damn thing is unplugged. doesnt make sense.

also it is a rebuild. it has about 2000+ miles. should i have replaced it when i did the build.

and there is no gauge just a little blinking light.

The oil pressure sensor completes a ground circuit when it sees low pressure. Unplug it and that circuit gets broken before the sensor, no light.

My credo
Failing is easy. Everyone can do it.

If it flickers at idle, when the engine is at temp? And then it goes away when you're driving it?

Yeah...that's a problem.

I would recommend pulling the sender for your gauge/light and install an aftermarket true gauge to see what is going on.

Here's what my BII does to give you something to compare with:
(I have an aftermarket gauge)

First start up of the day:

Oil pressure runs about 55-65 PSI.
Drive it down the street to operating temp and the oil pressure drops to 30-45.
Drive it on the highway at 65? Runs about 45ish.

Come to a traffic light after all that driving? Oil pressure is about 8psi. and raises up if I rev the engine.

Band Aid fix (aka...what I've done, sense I can't afford a lot of $$ to rebuild or replace the engine). Normally 10w30 (5w30 in very cold areas) is recommended. I run currently 5w50 oil in the winter time, and switch to 10w40 in the summer months. This gives me a hairs thicker oil so it has a bit more pressure that it can build. In other words: The thinner the oil is when the engine is 'hot'? Is that much more oil the bearings do not retain to 'hold' the pressure. The thicker oil tends to hold oil pressure only slightly better.

Now I know others will probably 'slam' me for pulling this stuff out of my hat? But it works for my BII. Not saying it will work for everyone? As always, your mileage may vary.

hey just an update. i replaced the oil pressure sensor. and now i have solid oil lamp light.

im running thicker oil but no change. so im guessing because i didnt change the oil pump when i rebuilt the motor its not getting good oil pressure. thus the light is on.

Do a real oil pressure test.

Also, what was your oil clearance when you put it back together?

And did you replace it with the correct sensor?
The one for a light is very small, and the one for a gauge is a small can like sensor.
Do as mentioned , and put a real gauge on it.
All you require is 10 psi per 1000 rpm.
