Has anyone had any success with installing a 360Fe in a 1993 ext cab 4x4? Found what I think would be a great deal on one just wanna make sure it will fit.

Anything will fit with persistance and a sawzall. Its been a while since ive seen an FE in person, but IIRC they are roughly the same size as a 335 series (351C/M/400) which in themselves only slightly smaller then a 460.

Unless you are going for orginality, and you want a bit more snap then a 302, i would think a 351W would be somewhat eaiser, plus its been done.

If you do want an FE, id go whole hog with a 390. Or install the 390 rotating assembly into your 360.

Im sure steering clearence, as well as radiator/fan clearence would be the biggest obstacles. Next would be the weight of an FE, but a set of 150 springs (minimum) or 250 (what id reccomend) would fix that.

Youll need to make motor mounts, and do some smash bashin on the trans tunnel. A C6 wont fit a factory tunnel on an RBV IIRC. A 4 speed might work, but to my knowledge theres no 5 speeds thatll accept a T case that will mate to an FE, i could be wrong though, or you could run an divorced case.

But to my original point, if your going for original, have at it (i personally think its a cool idea, even though im not a huge FE fan), on 2nd thought, a 400 would be just as much work, and will create massive torque when done right, and still be original...

But a windsor would be the easiest if we are talking in the 350-400CID range.

I am wanting to do the 302 swap but I found the FE motor and c6 for $250. Since the 302 is easier and has been done more I'll stick with that. Thank you Rusty ole ranger for the info... you answered my question.

Happy to help

250 bucks is about what a C6 would go for (if its good) by itself. The 360 is one of those engines no one wants, cause when it goes bad a 390 drops right in. Kinda why the 351M/400 are a dime a dozen, cause a 460 bolts right in. Even though, from a reliabilty standpoint, and in my opinion, the M engines walk all over a 460.

Will the c6 bolt to the 302? If so I may just ask him what he wants for the trans. Get the tail and the transfercase later.

No, the FE bolt pattern is different then a windsors bellhousing.

Youll need a C6 from a 300/302/351W.

Look for mid-late 80s F250s with a 351 W. They are still pretty common in yards and are almost guranteed to be a C6. In 89 the E4OD came out, you wont want that unless you feel like buying a computer to run it (assuming youre going carbed). But the C6 was used all the way to 96, but the later you go the rarer they get. Just make sure its from a 300/302/351W. A 351M/400/6.9/7.3/460 one will not work.

Don't short sell the 360, the block is the same as the 390, only the rotating assembly was different. As for the 351C, 351M & 400 being the same physical size, that's not true. The 351C was shorter and narrower and used the small block bellhousing pattern, along with the same motor mounts.

I wasnt selling the 360 short, just saying why use a 360 when you can have a 390? The 360 was a decent engine, as was the 390 (athough personally ill take a 351M/400 given the choice).

I remebered the C used the smallblock bell but i havent seen one up close in pry, 20 years. I forgot what size they were physically, so my bad.

So, to the OP, you could use a C6 that was bolted to a 351C, or even an very early 400 (some of those also carried a windsor pattern), but good luck finding one.

Like i said, a mid-late 80s 3/4 ton is your best bet.

That being said though, a C6 is overkill for a 302. Have you thought about a C4? It wont rob as much power.

I dont know a whole lot about the C4/C5 but if you go that route i know plenty guys around here know those.

Sorry, I just didn't want him to get the idea the 360 was worth less than a 390 as far as selling it went. At this point in time, FE's aren't exactly plentiful as they once were. A good FE block nowadays don't grow on trees.:icon_thumby: (me personally ? The 351M was and always will be a turd, now where near on a par with the 360 ) :icon_thumby:

Yes you can use the 360 as a basis for a 390, but as a 360 they arnt worth much :)

Honestly, the 351M/400 is my second favorite fullsize ford engines, second (and a close second) only to the 300 Straight 6.

Ive had a bit of everything it seems over the years, and the old "junk modifieds" always treated me the best.
