so my 2.9 is gutless and I bought a 4.0 to replace it. looking how to swap it, it almost seems harder to put a 4.0 in then a 5.0 or 5.8. so Im thinking of buying this 88 f150 5 speed 4x4 ill need to put an 8.8 in my ranger, along with a d35. im not sure if the donor is a 302 or a 351 but ive got a few questions I cant find answers too.

how does the transmission line up? do I need to change my seats to fit the shifter between them?

is the f150 a hydraulic clutch?

I assume I need custom motor mounts, transmission mounts, and drive shafts.

what about my gauges? they should work fine right?

do I need to change my throttle cable?

anything else I need to know?

The biggest thing you need to know is that the F150 is possibly the worst engine donor for a 5.0 swap. The intake is too tall, the FEAD is too long. Mustang is better, Explorer is best.

The 5.0 is not less work than the 4.0, especially in a 91. The 4.0 swap will be almost plug and play. The engine mounts are already right, the 4.0 harness will plug into the dash, and the trans will bolt up, but it's still recommended to replace it with a 4.0 unit.

The 5.0 will require the trans be replaced. The engine will probably be in and out of the body several times to figure out clocking and placement. The exhaust gets in the way of the steering. If you aren't lifted it can be a real PITA.

Unless your truck is a 2wd you already have a Dana 35.

I thought they came with d28's.. I want to stay 4x4 so I thought it would be easier to get the f150 so I can have the motor and tranny and t case and stuff loo

In 1991 the only front axle was the 35.

Like I said, the F150 is the worst choice for donors. If you want a 4x4 manual transmission there is no one vehicle to pull all the parts from.

The F150 trans will work reasonably well, but like I said, there are issues to overcome with the intake, exhaust and accessory drive. Most of those issues are already dealt with if you use an Explorer engine.

My old truck was a 91 this one is the 90. I though with the newer v8 explorers it was harder because of the pats and he wiring
