I am losing fuel pressure in a bad way.

When I allow it to idle I am looking at 28 psi. When I pull the vacuum line from the regulator it jumps to 35 psi.

I know that is a little low, but my problem is when I give it gas the fuel pressure drops down below 20, I audibly hear a back fire, and the engine nearly dies. When I release the throttle it will jump back up to around 25.

The fuel pressure regulator is new and I recently cleaned the throttle body and upper intake. I also installed new denso plugs, plug wires, rotor, and cap. I will be changing the fuel filter again tomorrow.

Should I just go ahead and get to going after the fuel pump?

I was thinking the pump myself but wanted to get some opinions before I drop the tank.

You're pretty much down to the pump if you've changed the regulator and filter, that's all there is to the fuel system...

That's pretty much what I have decided on.

change the fuel filter again and then cut open the old one. if it is full of crud you might want to clean out the tank...

But I am leaning towards fuel pump as well.

Im changing it today to be on the safe side and I know there is probably a lot in the tank. It sat for years after my brother drove it.

Well just so I dont leave this thread open ended without answering my own question. It turns out that it was the tank rotting from the inside out that fouled my pump that in turn wouldnt even let my engine idle. It slowly failed and the psi gradually fell until the pump wouldnt even prime.

So lesson of the day is old fuel tanks rust and kill the rest of the fuel system.

ugh... that sucks. thanks for chiming in and letting us know what the solution was. Hopefully it will help another Ranger owner.

Are you replacing the tank, or sealing the original one?

Yah Ive dealt with rotten tanks in cars and in Briggs + Stratton OPE. Best is a complete new tank of some sort. I've never done it, but what if you cut open the top of the tank and then scrubbed and blasted.? Then weld or otherwise reseal the tank. I am happy the Rat's tank is plastic. I find them the best. Trouble is the coffin will rot out the frame rail flange it is screwed to. :D

I ended up changing everything out. I changed the tank the pump and the filter. Now she runs as well as any 2.9 would.
