I had purchased a 89 ranger xlt the passenger side rear lights had stopped working I pulled a diagram from mitchell on demand 5 and re did the wiring

(the person I got it from put a new bed and when wiring I found he used loads of masking tape which was coming off everywhere)

so everything works when lights are off when I turn the lights on everything works till I hit the brakes then passenger side lights go off let off brakes they come back on

I am thinking ground issue but want to see what other think

Good page to bookmark: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/index.shtml

If you go down to Electrical diagrams you will find 1983-1991 Wiring Diagrams click on it

Then click on 1983-1989 exterior lighting

You will see this: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/EDiagrams/files/Diagram_Exteriorlights_1983to1989.JPG

Ford's not very imaginative with wire colors

Parking lights/tail lights, license plate lights, Brown, Brown, wait for it............Brown, lol, so brown wires power regular lights
Blacks are the Grounds

Turn signal and Brakes lights are different
The front turn signals are not shared with brake lights, either are the dash board turn indicators.

Rear turn signals are shared with brake lights, this sharing is done IN the Multi-Function switch(turn signal stalk)
But not shared with parking lights, bulb is dual filament, one is only for parking lights, the other is for Turn AND Brake.
Both filaments share the same Ground, so if Parking lights work the ground is good.

Orange/Light Blue stripe wire is passenger side turn/stop wire
