Ok it does not matter if ac is on off or even if the heat is on it still does it.

AC will normally kick on at either defrost setting...

As far as the other settings, (on newer cars, I dunno about as old as a 94) the AC function is controlled electronically. There's a switch in the temperature dial and a switch in the position dial so that if you command cold enough air or set the switch to "Max AC", it gives you AC.

If one of these switches has failed closed, it will constantly be kicking on your AC when it is not commanded by the temperature or position dial.

Unless you have a 2.3 engine, the AC isn't enough of a drain to significantly effect your mileage

Its just annoying and ya it literally has nearly killed the truck at a stoplight. The defrost was on heat when I first noticed it but it kept doing it when all switches were set to off so I guess I need a new panel.

My credo
live everyday like your gonna die tomorrow
I was told the AC operates to take the humidity out of the cabin air, the only position it will NOT operate is the vent position.
In cold weather I only run the vent with heat , therefore don't have to hear the AC pump.

If it nearly killed a 4.0, there's too much strain on it... mine is doing that to my 2.3, but the 2.3 puts upa fight for like 3 cycles, then it dies.

I only have a 250 watt amp to a slim 10 that did fine when I had it in my other ranger which was a 2.3. Ill check the battery and cables not sure where the grounds are but I'm sure they probably should be checked. Anything else yall can think of to check or if I'm heading in the right direction?

I believe the AC works in all positions but heat and vent. And, the compressor cycles on as part of its normal operation.
