Not completed but a good start.
Started with some 6"x3" 1/4 wall tubing, and a wheel hub from a small trailer.

Mocked it up with jack stands, took some 2"1/4" wall square tubing for the lower support

Then some 2" 3/16 wall for uprights and supports

Placed a 32" tire from the explorer which will soon be a matching 33"
tire.. I thought I had it all figured out and the I built the damn thing to high, so a few cuts and re building and should be were I want it..

Should have finished pics soon, with paint and locking latch installed..

Awesome. I like the trailer hub use, but that kills your rear view a bit.

So I cut 4 inches out & angled it back to follow the contour of the rear hatch. Boxed in the ends.

Painted it all up and put a mock up wheel on it.

Tire still sits a little high, but it will do.
Will add the high lift under the tire and mount to the swing out arm. Going to add tow strap hooks when I find the ones I want...

Nice work.

I'm a bit curious, how much does that thing weigh?

Well actual wait, I don't know, but it is stout.
If I had to guess, I bet it's close to 100-125lbs.
What's nice with the trailer hub it is effortless to
Swing open. I'm pretty sure if someone rearends
It the bumper is going to come out ontop..

It's a 1/2" hitch receiver pin, same pin used on a rear hitch of a truck. I found one with a loop handle on it, thought it looked a little better then just the bent one. I drilled a hole through the swing out arm and welded a 2" piece to the top of the bumper...

I want to add, most hitch pins are 5/8 so if this route you go and want 1/2" you might have to look at a farm implement type store.. We had them laying around the shop..

Couldn't tell you on the price, I had all steel that I used. I used 3"x6" for the bumper and 2"x2" for everything else.
