noise from my rear end

I'm getting some noise in 3rd, 4th, and 5th, sometimes in second in my '89 B2. Only when I am accelerating. I'm not sure how to get at the bearings to replace them - the Haynes manual is pretty vague. I have replaced the seal where the CV joint meets the rear end but I don't remember what it looks like in there- is it pretty self-explanatory once you are looking at the bearing how to get it out or am I going to do something else before I can pull the old one out?
Also, if I take the cover off the back of the differential isn't there another bearing in the back, too? Is it easy to get to or is it a big pain in the rear?

There are 4 bearings in the axle itself:

2 pinion bearings and 2 carrier bearings. All of them are pressed on and a PITA to swap out. Plus you have to reset your gears again which is even MORE a PITA. If you have play in the pinion, its usually the bearings going bad

Noise from your rearend??? That's an easy one, Bro. It is caused by a Brown Growler AKA the Barking Cave Spider. :icon_rofl:

Most likely a bearing is going out. When was the last time it was serviced?

I bought this vehicle a few years ago, so who knows if it has ever been serviced? I noticed a vibration for a second every time when going from accelerating to coasting downhill. The seal by the driveshaft was leaking so I replaced it and topped off the differential and that seemed to work for a while. Now I have this new noise all the time. I was hoping I could just swap out a bearing and it'd be fine. Isn't the bearing n the driveshaft end pretty easy to get to?

Try a thicker lube. If that quiets it down, youre set. If it doesnt, keep track of the lube and turn up the radio.

Let's not forget the outer axle bearings....that makes 6 total.

not sure what rear end that would be, but you are definitely better off getting it delt with sooner rather than later, if you leave it too long and it is the bearings they can wear on the axles and that will add even more to the repair bill if they need to be replaced, just be glad it isnt the 9.75" rear end like I had in my old truck, $1200 to get new bearings put in the thing :icon_surprised:

and that was at a good mechanic that I trust, he could have tacked a LOT more onto that bill with the pinion bearing and new axles etc if he wanted to screw me over

it was really odd sounding too, only noticed it while accelerating but by the time I got it fixed I thought for sure the carrier was loose of something the way it was clunking and shit, looked like there had been water in the diff at some point

Rear-end mystery noise

OK, so I drove around on a really cold night - 16 degrees - and no noise. Next day just little noise as I shifted between 2nd and 3rd. Next day the regular noise. Next day noise in the morning, no noise in the afternoon.
Any guesses?

Gear noise. Take the rear cover off, put a banana in there, refill with 75-140, and drive.

75-140 is thicker than 80-90 right? I'm up in the mountains for the first time and everyone here says use lighter oil because of the cold weather.
