I'm doing a bit of an overhaul on the fuel system in my 1994 B4000. I was smelling fuel a bit near the engine bay and noticed that rodents chewed through my carbon canister and several hoses leading to it.:annoyed: So I replaced all of that stuff up front. I also installed a new fuel pump, which went fine but while I was working on that I found another issue.

The rubber supply/return/vapor lines that run along the frame rail from the filter to the tank are so dry rotted I was afraid they were going to crumble as I pulled them off the old pump. Given that I would not like to die a fiery death, I'd like to replace these lines. It looks like that assembly from Ford runs about $175 -- if I can even still get it (Ford part 9J279) - which is a bit more than I'd like to spend. Can I just use regular fuel injection hose (and Evap hose for the vapor line) and clamps for these three hoses instead of the fancy triple tube rubber with quick connects from Ford? Anyone know what size line I would need?

And if anyone knows a way to keep mice or rats from chewing on my engine bay, I'm all ears. I figured all the owls and hawks around here would keep them occupied but I guess not.

Return fuel line and EVAP lines have virtually no pressure, so any type of hose, that is gasoline resistant, will be fine to use

That's what I was hoping to hear. Thank you Ron. That will be tomorrow's project.

I changed out the pressure regulator today and I'm also going to change the filter while I'm at it. I changed it a few years ago and it's probably only been a few thousand miles since this is my weekend hauler, but better safe than sorry.

Well it didn't turn out to be today's project because my local parts stores were out of what I was looking for. But it did give me a chance to research other options. I've decided to use Dorman's nylon fuel lines and quick connect fittings. Examples...

Readily available from Amazon and not terribly expensive. I read that some folks have had challenges getting the tubing onto the connectors, but I'm going to give it a go. Anyone have any experience with this or other similar products?

Haven't worked with the nylon line, but I can tell you that if you use rubber line for the pressure or return line, you'll want to use fuel injection line. The regular rubber fuel line doesn't stand up to the ethanol in the gas these days.

I was originally planning to use rubber fuel injection line. But the nylon line seems like it would make for a cleaner install and my internet research makes it seem that the manufacturers are using it from the factory these days.

Still looking for any tips or tricks for the nylon. I'll see if I can take some pics as I do the install.

Can anyone verify that fuel lines on the 4.0 OHV should all be 5/16" -- for supply and return? I was originally thinking that the supply was 3/8" because the supply port from the fuel pump is 3/8". But the fuel filter in/out and the tubes that lead to/from the fuel rail seem to all be 5/16". I have a real Ford shop manual and it makes no mention of the line size spec that I can find.
