So I start my truck this morning (-6F outside) and notice I have no oil pressure! :bawling:

Usually the guage shoots right up to operating pressure the moment the engine starts, but this morning is slowly creeps up to just under the low pressure line.

Could this be a dead/dying pump? A clogged pickup? Oil that's too cold to circulate?

This truck has been treading thin ice lately....:annoyed:

Did it build up to pressure eventually?

The oil pressure sensor on Explorer's and Ranger's is basically an on/off switch, so when it's really cold outside sometimes it'll read no oil. It should have jumped up once the oil warmed up a bit though

Ok..disaster averted for now. Went out to check again and everything seems to be back to normal. I'm letting the truck run for a while to warm up and i'll keep checking it over the day.

Thanks for the info guys.

-6 (Canadian) shouldn't be a problem...glad to hear it came up...maybe wiggle the wire on the sensor to see if it corrects it...may even show it dropping due to a wonky connection...

And, if it makes you feel any better, my truck seems to be peeing out oil from somewhere and have to keep topping it up...no leaks that I can see...and it doesn't seem to be smoking in a public place...just disappears...

Yeah Mine does that too... On my 99' when its cold out it will stay down then jump up when it warms up a little but never does it in the summer. If there was no oil pressure for the time that I was runnign the engine with the gauge down the engine should be dead.

mine does the same.
when the engine is cold the needle wont move, until it warms up.

i cleaned the sender the other day and it went from 3 mins to something like 2 mins to read pressure.

i need to replace it and add a real oil pressure gauge :D

What I always tell people when they have a "low" reading is to determine if the problem is "real" and not an "instrumentation" problem

i know mine is instrumentation problem, because i know the engine wont drive around for 3-4 minutes everyday with 0 oil pressure and still work fine.
its doing this since november 08.
on the first cold start, and then every time i start it during the day(after being cooled down)

Change your oil and filter, run a qt through the motor. And make sure you save the oil to do it again... Gets all the old sluge stuff out. My b2 had 5 lbs idle hot, and 28 after I did that.

I imagine that the fact that your chain tensioners are coming apart doesn't help any.
