I have a 2001 ford ranger 4.0L V6, and I was wondering if y'all think that it'd be possible to take the 4WD from a 2005 Ford Escape 3.0L V6 and put it in my 2WD ford ranger, I really don't want to buy a donor ranger and I have the escape sitting in the yard with a blown tranny, would this be possible?

Not even close. What you have proposed is ideologically the same as taking a model and trying to make her prettier by adding parts from a fish.

In a 4x4 Ranger you have an engine cross-member and frame parts that are different from a 2wd, unless you are dealing with a Ranger Edge. You have different output shafts on the transmission between 4x4 and 2wd. Also, there is the issue of the front axle you would need to make the Ranger 4x4.

Now with all that in mind, your Escape is a front wheel drive vehicle. It has a transverse mounted engine, and a transaxle, with a power take-off unit in line with the passenger side axle shaft, rather than the longitudinally oriented engine and rear-wheel drive transmission of your Ranger, which would have a proper transfer case, were it 4x4.

The Escape adds a rear driveshaft, rear diff, and rear axles to add 4x4 to the base model, where a Ranger adds those items in the front. Should you manage to get an Escape PTU mated up to the back of your transmission your drive shaft would be at a 90* angle to the rest of the power train.

You need to use Ranger parts, or better yet go buy a 4x4 Ranger and sell the 2wd.

Doesn't really work out well for mermaids...

Best bet if you want to convert your Ranger (and it isn't torsion bar) is a SAS. After you design your own suspension with whatever solid front axle you use you will only need both driveshafts, transfer case and a different transmission.

And that sounds easier than it is. :icon_thumby:

Since you do have an Edge, should have the torsion front suspension, swapping in the required 4x4 parts from 4x4 Ranger becomes a lot easier. Should find some posts on it being done.
