I doubt that little engine diesel or not is very heavy, most of tractors weight is on the truck and that is why it is sitting like it is.

The pic somehow got deleted but I have trailered tractor engines half as big as your tractor without that much squat...
Yeah, just back it up so the trailer axles are doing the heavy lifting. There's really not much to a Ranger. The rear axle is only rated to 2,750#. Each of those trailer axles are 3,500# capacity--yet you skootch the tractor to the front. Use the trailer to carry the weight and the truck to pull it. You only need enough tongue weight to control it.

I have the same van but it's a 2000 with a full-floater. I have pulled my track loader and cars behind it, but the worst I ever tried was my 6,000#, 3-axle gooseneck. I was selling it to a guy down in Tennessee and the truck I use to pull the gooseneck doesn't have air conditioning or cruise control. So for grins I bought a 2-5/16ths ball and hooked the 2,000# tongue weight empty trailer to the van. I was surprised that in spite of that long overhang--the van didn't give a 5hit about that trailer.

We use the van to go to Florida every year and get 21mpg with my motorcycle and a bunch of bikes hanging way off the back. But my wife bought a new Mercedes Sprinter so the days are numbered I think.

Here's my (Dad's) tow pig, one day to be mine. Anything that the Ranger can't pull or haul is given to this (so pretty much everything!) Regularly pulls our 30ft 6200# dry weight Toyhauler with 2200# of "Toys" 18 Gal of fuel and 100 Gal water (round 9500#??) no problem.

2003 Chevy 2500HD 6.0 with 4 speed Auto 53,xxx miles currently. Dad bought it new when I was 8. Garage queen it's whole life and always synthetic fluids. Dad says he needs it for another 8-10 years then its all mine and he'll buy a diesel.

Here's my tow rig.
An ol' 6.9 with a turbo, and an overdrive unit. It does nothing awesome, but everything well.

Wrong. That thing is awesome. Who doesn't like a 2 tone bull nose era pickup?

Neat-o. I have pulled a few trailers around with my '86. Those EFI 302's are actually kinda snappy little motors. Nothing like my 460 but it gets the job done in a pinch. I am gathering parts to do a 351/ZF swap in mine. Yours looks like it is fantastic shape.

I did pretty well even with the C6 and 3.08s in the rear, but now its ZF5 and I am regearing...not sure whether I will go 3.73 or 3.55. Its getting 8 lug swapped with an 8.8 from a LD F250, so it will be still be light duty truck, but better suited for tow for weekend tow pig duty. I originally was going to use a Sterling 10.25, but there is no point in having such a heavy axle under a half ton frame in this application.

It looks pretty good for its age...especially in pictures, but all the body panels have a few dings and the rear wheel wells are starting to rust. This fall I will be putting the mint bed on and the NOS front fenders and sending it to the paint booth.

It now sits on 16x8 Alcoas

It doesn't get 21mpg like a cummins, I get 18 unloaded. But it doesn't get 14 like a Duramax, either.
It'll pull what ever hill you point it at loaded, at 35mph, but it struggles to do more (mountain passes)
And it doesn't drive awesome, but it doesn't drive like shit either.
It's an old truck though, but I love it. Selling it is going to be hard.
