replaced speed sensor and gear on side of transmission on 97 ford ranger. drove down road, ran good, then started messing up again. took the new speed sensor gear out and it is chewed up again. what could be causing this?

Binding cable perhaps? Incorrect installation? Broken/rough tooth inside transmission? Seems like it'd be very noticeable if something was wrong inside the transmission. Maybe check the fluid on the stick once its good and warm to see if metal is getting past the magnet in the pan? I try my best to stay away from automatic tranny's, just trying to offer up some food for thought...
