i didn't phrase this right in another forum;
Ford changed from calling a 302 a 302 to calling it a 5.0. did they change from using SAE bolts and nuts to using metric hardware at the same time?
i'm trying to avoid putting metric threaded bolts in SAE holes and screwing up the bolts and the holes.
the motor is a '78 302 and the truck is a '90 ranger

Everything on a 302/5.0 block is still SAE. Long time ago I bought a set of thread chasers in both metric and SAE, both to clean out threaded holes and to identify what threads. Sure helps avoid using the wrong fastener.

Yes, SAE

302 engine is actually a 4.9l in metric, but Fords inline 6 cylinder(300ci) was a 4.9l so 302 got the 5.0l designation by 2ci, lol

Basically a name change not mechanical change

The block itself may be standard but some things that attaches to it may not be.

Like what holds the alternator to the alternator bracket and so forth... your results may vary especially the newer you go.

On the 5.0, all fasteners that bolt to the block or heads are SAE.

After that, all the fasteners that bolt to something held by those SAE fasteners are metric.

It would also have screwed up the pattern.
