Gonna get a 460
Transmission
Automatic
.

This is sort of useless babling and thinking out loud... looking for some opinions...

I'm swapping a carbed 460 into my '93 Ranger, but still kind of undecided on which transmission to use. I want an auto with OD. It's a 2wd with a 3.73 rear end ratio and will have ~28" tires on the back. It's gonna be a daily driver and not driven hard.

The two choices I'm considering are an AOD or an E4OD.

AOD

Cost = $500 total to use this transmission.

I already own this transmission, it's from a SuperCoupe, and I know for a fact it's in good shape and works well.

The adapter kit from Lentech is around $500, and he says he won't be making any for a few months. (I want to start setting this engine in now)

The A4LD used a TV cable incorporated into the gas pedal that I can probably make work with the AOD.

The AOD will fit easily into the trans tunnel

E4OD

Cost = About $950 to use this transmission

Slightly better first gear ratio than the AOD

I'd have to buy a junkyard trans, about $400 around here

I'd have to buy a computer and wiring harness, about $550

The trans is HUGE!!! Will it even fit?

I'd have to rig up a TPS on the carb, which adds clutter under the hood.

Just looking for opinions...

E4OD hands down...Reliability wise, the E4 will beat an AOD with no problem. The E4OD was used behind the powerstroke and was used for a variety of years...My dad is running the E4 behind his 290K F350, never been out, regular fluid changes, has even pulled a few 15K loads for 500 miles, still running strong, shifts strong :icon_thumby:

I would use the 4R70W over the AOD any day. If you were considering using the E4OD then consider the 4R70W as they both will use the same stand alone computer to run either one. I am running the Baumann TCS and its a simple system to use and the software isnt to bad to use either. The E4OD is alot stronger unit then the 4R70W but with a few minor upgrades the 4R70W will take a lot of abuse fom that 460 and live. I vote for the 4R70W unless you are doing something crazy like big tires for wheeling and getting silly with it then the E4OD is the way to go. :icon_thumby:

If your list you have was mine, I'd do the AOD. You know it will fit, there's no worry in electronics, and you have one already. By chance have you called Art Carr to see if they have/make an adapter?

These guys say they have one:

FYI, the E4 is big, but it will fit. I was going to use this trans in my V8 swap, but found a complete donor with a 4R70W...There are pics in the FS forum, I have one and if you want I can shoot you some measurements if you'd like :icon_thumby:

do you smoke crack? there is no way the 4r70w is even in the same class as an E4od. a stock jy 4r70w aka crown vic trans will not stand to a mildly built 460....... it wont even stand up a 4.6L in an Expedition........ you need your mouth washed out with transmission fluid.

I would take the trans with an overdrive drum (E4OD/4R100, possibly the strongest automatic ford has ever built) over one with an overdrive band (aod, aode, 4r70w/4r75w). keep this in mind ........ the E4OD/4R100 evolved from the C6 and the aod, aode, 4r70w/4r75w evolved from a C4

My 4R70W stands up to my 5.4L F-150 just fine... and it does more than most Expeditions. I use it to tow my 5k lb tractor around, 80k and knocking on wood it hasn't missed a beat.

The AOD/AODE/4R70W... is based off the FMX, the C4 grew into a C5 and died out.

The 4R100 wasn't even really all that great where Ford put them originally. They had serious problems standing up to a weak by todays standards 7.3's.

yeah well tell that to the 4R70w that I had to have rebuilt at 108,xxx, or the 4r70w in my previous 97 F-150 that was also behind a 4.6L ........... maybe its the 4.6L thats worthless............

Bro has 14x,xxx on his 4.6 F-150, got it with 90k and hasn't touched the 4R70W in it either.

No I dont hang out with Dumb F*cks like you who do!!! :thefinger:

Before you spew shit from your mouth you should get some facts straight.

I stated that the E4OD/4R100 was alot stronger unit then the 4R70W but with a few upgrades the 4R70W will take alot of abuse to, and with that I never said that the 4R70W was or would be as strong as the E4OD/4R100. The stand alone computer system that would run the E4OD/4R100 is the same one that would hook up and run the 4R70W. He was concerned with the E4OD fitting and the 4R70W was a better option then the weak ass AOD.
I also stated that if he was going to be doing some serious wheeling that he should consider the E4OD over the 4R70W. The stock 4R70W were changed in 98 and with just a valve body kit it will handle 500hp. If you had so many problems with your 4R70W's then it must have been redone by crappy builders or you are just a idiot behind the wheel. The E4OD/4R100 need upgrades in them to to handle anything more then a stock 7.3l diesel and that is why Ford came out with a 5R110 in the 6 Liter diesels becuse they could handle the new power of the 6.0 diesel. The E4OD/4R100 have problems with breaking sprags, overdrive drums, intermediate shafts and boost valves that were a very shitty designs. Dont even go there with the E4OD/4R100 as they have their fair share of problems. The 4R70W's came in many more vehicals the just a Crown Vic's. The 32v Lincoln Mark VIII's, 32v Mach1 Mustangs, Explorers, Mauraders, 5.4l F150 to name a few. Here is some info on 4R70W's so you can get some what a clue to the shit you are spewing!!!:icon_rofl:

You have the A4LD, the E4OD and the 4R70W both have different bolt patterns.
