I was looking at the aftermarket air intakes being sold for 95/97 2.3Ls. Has anyone used these ? feedback ? The one that costs more looks like if the Ranger had A/C the MAF may hit the A/C line. They don't look bad for the price. I don't know if I like the open element air filter. I just don't like the factory black rubber air intake hoses. It would be nice if someone made the aluminum intake tubes that would fit the factory air filter housing.

Just keep the stock setup and hollow out the intake muffler. Aftermarket intakes usually don't do a damn thing.

My 96 has one on it but not sure if it did anything to improve performance...only thing I can say is I don't like that Valve cover vent hose going into the intake the way it does...but if your engine isn't spitting oil it shouldn't be a problem...

I like the stock 3.0 setup...the valve cover vent actually goes into the bottom of the air box on the driver side so the oil doesn't actually make its way into the air intake directly...so I may actually incorporate that at some point if I can...there isn't as much junk on the passenger side as the 88 carb setup has...so it's probably doable...

Like on the older F-series, then. My 87 F150, 89 Bronco and 95 F250 are like that. Don't forget the little filter in the bottom of the air filter housing for the vent tube!

Sure they do something.... they drain your wallet and then drain it again when your out of filter oil, mod your old box, check the tech section for the air muffler cure, and if you dont have that you can mod the stock air intake, just remember because it sounds louder doesnt make it faster:beer:

Yes, if you are doing it strictly for looks the after market intake plenums and filters are fine.
Find one that you like and that fits.

The open filters are done for the sound they make, another aesthetic "want".

But make no mistake, ALL of the tests done by independent mechanics on dyno machines show 0 improvement using after market intake plenums and filters.

I wasn't looking at this for more power. I couldn't even feel a change in power with my Dynomax cat back exhaust and K&N filter and a tune up. I do like the exhaust sound with the dynomax. I was thinking of the after market air intake more for engine dress up. The factory air hoses are kind of dried out looking. The thing I don't like about the open air filter is that you will be sucking in warmer air from under the hood. The factory air filter gets cooler air from the inner fender. Either way I don't think it will make much difference performance wise. I was just hoping to find someone here that had used either of these brands of after market air intakes for some feed back on fit and quality. Thanks.

Oh, sure...like I said there is one on my truck and it fits fine...I was taking apart the filter end so I could get at something and it came apart with no problem...just using band clamps and a bit of flexible rubber for the connections so not much to them...and if they are made for the 2.3 then they would provide the rubber sleeves for the TB and MAF connections...the filter end is fitted right to the tube from what I remember (that truck is not on location or I'd go out and look)...

The one on my truck is sort of like a combination of the two images but not exactly like either one...so I'd imagine there are a few different types out there...only difference I noticed was one states clearly that it is for manual transmissions...so I'd imagine there is a slight difference in routing to get around the dipstick for the transmission fluid.
