changing the fuel filler neck

So I got a new filler neck and I remember that the last time I messed with my factory filler neck that it was so corroded the rubber was permanently stuck to the filler neck. Now that I have a new one, I need to get the old one off without cutting off the rubber hoses. It doesn't look like I have much room for error so I need all the extra hose length I can get. Does anyone have experience with stubborn filler necks? I plan on being on our lift and probably have to use a flathead screwdriver and pry the rubber hoses off. Just wanted to know if there's a better way.

This tool will make getting the hoses off easier. It works better than a flathead screwdriver.

You put the pointy end in and twist it around.

Just be cautious so you don't poke a hole in your hose.

I do not like sticking picks or screw drivers in to break hoses loose.

I much prefer to get a pair of channel locks on the outside of it and twisting the hose to break the seal.

I find that method has a much higher success rate for not tearing the rubber.

Yeah those picks look handy but you all see how nice and lovely my hoses are. I can see those picks ripping through the hose. I like the channel lock idea but my filler neck is literally broken where it bolts to the bed. So there isn't much supporting it for channel locks. I will give it a shot though. It has to come off on way or another. Anyone know of any sprays that will soften the rubber to help make this easier? we have some slide room treatment we use for rubber seals to help keep the rubber soft. I was going to try that and see what it does. I think a flat head, a mallet and some channel locks are going to be the winners here.

Well that's obvious. You don't understand how corroded this is. I've tried getting this off in the past and it was like super glued together. Would need two hands on the hose and someone else holding the filler neck.

WD-40 could make it easier to slide. You could work a dull butter knife carefully under the hose and keep adding spray. Then maybe twist the hose with one of those strap wrenches with the rubber strap which won't tear the rubber and can apply tremendous twisting force. Might be worth a try.

I forgot about that. I have one of the strap wrenches somewhere. Its one 1 of 800 places I keep tools lol. I never used it much so I don't keep track of it. That would probably be the bee-knees of choices for the rubber hose.

You wanna save the hose,and the metal is already trashed and due to be replaced? Trash the metal completely, so you can get the hose out where you can work on it

It already can. I went to put gas in it the other day and gas hit the pavement. looked under and saw the filler neck just hanging out. ended up bungee cording it up in place. So trashed metal is not an issue. It's the fact that the filler neck has corroded itself permanently to the rubber hose lol.

Can you replace the hose without dropping the tank? The hose has to be nasty .

Yes, but the bed has to come off. I took the bed and the tank off to fix the frame. After I hung the tank , I spent some time wire wheeling the neck down to bare metal. The hose stayed on. I patched the pin holes with JB Weld. The hose at the tank was split so I glommed it with Permatex Gray goop and some clamps. The wiring plug crumbled when I took it off . I soldered the connections in place and gooped it. So far, so good.
