I am no expert but I used a 1993 Mustang 5.0 starter on a 01 Explorer engine with a T5, 5 speed in a 1999 Ranger. This is with a 164 tooth flywheel from a 1993 5.0 Mustang.

5.0 T-5 uses a 157 tooth flywheel. Whatever year model F-150 came with a 4.2 v6 manual should work since they had the R2 trans.

Yep, you are correct, I went back and double checked. The M-6375-A302 flywheel I used was 157 tooth. Sorry for the incorrect info.

You need to use this starter.

1999-2003 F150 I300 "Short Nose" Manual Starter (for 164 Tooth Flywheel)

Reason being is the auto 164t flexplate and the manual 157t manual flywheels take the long nose starter, if you use a starter meant for these it will contact the flywheel all the time.

The other option is to get a starter spacer/adapter, which you can find on ebay, and the spaces the "long nose" starter out some and matches up the holes for a bolt on solution to use a starter you already have.

The expensive route is to get something like a B&M 77101 mini starter, these are like $250 though. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bmm-77101/overview/

O'Reilly part number: USL 32286 F150 V8 5.0 been working fine for a couple years in mine. I never counted the teeth on my flywheel but it came out of a 1994 F-150 5.0.

Don't know if i have the wrong plate or what, the starter lacks .001" of fitting the plate. I was hesitant to grind on it but don't want to chaneg the plate.

Did you get this fixed?

.001 is so minimal it must be the right plate, it seems a little grind, a little tapa tap tap, or adjustment of the plate would make it fit.

At first I would would think you were using a 157tooth block plate, but it would be 3/8"-1/2" off, so at .001 that's not the case.

Not sure if this will help but I put in a 1996 Explorer in my Ranger mated to a T5 with 157t flywheel. I just used the original Explorer starter. I like it because it's small and seems to be powerful. I've been using the same starter for 4yrs now. I'm in Canada and drive my truck year round. Starts great in -30deg C weather.

I had the wrong plate, I found a bulliten from a starter manufacturer that gave dimensions. I tried to put it in tech articles don't know where it went. I ordered another plate from Bronco parts in Oregon and got it installed. Hey I needed the pratiice pulling my engine...
