it depends on how you have your account set up. mine's set up so i can have funds transferred on demand from my bank account to my paypal account. i also have multiple bank accounts and credit cards linked to my paypal account. i think the more they trust you, they more they will let you do. i even have a paypal debit card i can use in stores to buy things and it takes money from my paypal account.

if your account is fairly new or only has a single bank account linked to it, you probably wont have the option of instant transfers. you'll have to tell it to add funds, then wait 2 or 3 days for it to clear before you can spend it.

Both are possible.

You can transfer funds from your bank account into your paypal account to load it so to speak, or if your account doesn't have a balance and you try to pay for something it will pull straight from your bank account. I believe with the second option it takes a week to clear your payment though.

How the transfer goes through depends on your balance at the time...

If you have even a penny in your paypal balance the transaction goes through as an "instant payment"

If you have NO balance and your account draws from the tied checking account then most fund transfers go through as
an "E-check" and takes 3-5 days.

I'm not sue how it works if your back-up funding is from
a credit card.

Sounds accurate.

If your back-up funding is from a credit card it should be an instant payment.
