Help with changing out an electrical connector

I have a 1993 Ford Ranger -4 cylinder- 2.3 liter.

I need to change out the SMP Wire Harness Connector that connects to my coolant temp sensor.

If anyone knows of any good tutorials (preferably with pictures :shok: haha) I would really appreciate it.

I have attached a picture of the type of connector I am referring to.

Any auto parts store will carry butt connectors in various sizes. They will also sell a crimping tool. You can shrink the heat-shrink with a match, lighter, soldering iron, propane torch or a heat gun.

Orient the new and old connector in the same direction just in case the wires are different colors, cut off the old connector and strip the wire back about 3/8", insert wire in butt connector, crimp and then shrink the heat shrink. Done!

Ok, are we talking about just changing a broken connector like that for one that isn't broken or re-pinning the connector? Or is it that you need to change the gender of the plug?

If it's just re-pinning or replacing a broken connector, it's pretty easy to do, no cutting involved. In that picture, see the blue tab in the end? That gets hooked and pulled out. Then you can stick a pick down in the connector to release the tab holding the wire in, and pull the wire out the back. Stick them down in the replacement and put the tab back in.
