So my daughter has a 2005 Ford Ranger 3.0 Auto 2WD XLT 2Door Extended Cab and she hydroplaned the other day and was hit broadside on the rear drivers side wheel/tire and bed.

Any tips what I should check for on damage besides the obvious?

Damage I can see is ....

Axle shaft
Tire
Possible wheel
Center Cap
Backing Plate
Brakes (I already have all new brake parts because I was ready to redo the rear breaks)
Rear lower bed

Since I’m doing the axle shaft I will replace the outer axle bearings and seal. New diff cover gasket and oil. Am I missing anything?

Thanks in advance

Put a straight edge on that tube. Do it at at least four evenly spaced locations around the tube, make sure it isn't tweaked.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I agree. Check the tube really good. You can do a rough check on the wheel pretty easily. Install it somewhere else on the vehicle. With it off the ground, fasten a screwdriver or something similar to a jack, cement block, or whatever you have, and position it so that it is just barely touching the edge of the rim. Then spin the wheel by hand and watch how much the rim moves closer to the screwdriver tip or further away. That will show how badly the rim is bent. Watch for both axial and radial movement (wobble).

Thanks for the replies. I was planning on a straight edge and doing a few measurements to make sure everything is squared up.

Do axle shafts usually come with lugnut studs already pressed in? Pics online show no studs.

Just curious.

It depends on the shaft. Studs are cheap though, so it might be worth getting a few just in case. They are much easier to put in while the shaft is out.

Well found out the rear flange is also bent on the rear end. I was hoping just the backing plate was bent. Guess it’s time to find a used rear end. Her axle tag shows it’s a 7.5 with 3:73 gears. Maybe I can find a rear end with 4:10 gears since it has the 31” Tires.

Check out the axles and gears page in the "How to tech" section. Then go find an 8.8" with 4.10's.

And that is more or less what I was afraid of.
