I'm not entirely sure what I want to do for a swap. I have the 4L v6 now, the stock motor. I definitely want to boost power, I plan to use this truck something hard, towing up and around 2-2 1/2 tons or so, some relatively demanding offroading, and some basic muscle work, like pulling stumps once in a while. Now I know the 4L is a fine engine, and mine only has about 105k miles on it, but it just doesn't have the power I'm going to want, especially for the offroading. Here's the problem I have: i don't know what engine to put in. the 351w seems like a solid motor, but the numbers just don't seem that spectacular, considering the size of the engine and my truck. I've really been thinking either finding an f-150 coyote 302 or a 3.5 ecoboost. Both have some very impressive numbers. Trouble is they're bloody expensive, and I can't seem to find the numbers to see if they'll even fit in my truck. I know I'm probably going to need a new transmission, and I was thinking the 6r80 would be a solid bet. I'm not sure about transfer case or axles though, but of course a new driveshaft would be necessary. Any other suggestions for a tough engine to fit in my ranger? I also liked the coyote and the ecoboost because they both get better mileage than I do now with my own ranger.

I've done some more research actually and I like the look of the 5.0 coyote engine. Its still a modular 302, and there's no shortage of 302's in rangers, that's for sure. I figure if I just get a 6r80 to match it and probably a new driveshaft and transfer case, I should be fine. I don't see any reason why the dana 35 axle shouldn't hold up just as well. Plus it has plenty of power for offroad mayhem, which is the primary reason for the engine swap

of the current ford platforms, the 5.0/6r from a 150 is probably the cheapest and easiest to go with.

and it will absolutely destroy a dana 35 to smithereens unless driven diligently.

define diligently? Because I plan to do some pretty demanding offroading, so would that fall into the realm of diligently? If so, I could always grab some dana 60's and swap that out while I'm at it.
