Im rebuilding my '97 3.0 ,
when installing the new cps-cam sensor, do you line up the slot w/ the slot on the housing when its at TDC?

my book says mark the pos. before removal, but I chewed all the teeth off the old one, so it stoped spinning and so did my oil pump, but all my bearings are spinning now:thefinger:

I welcom any help
Thanks

I assume your talking about the syncro and not the cam positioning sensor because it has no teeth:) Get the motor to TDC on the compression stroke for the number one cylinder and install the new syncro with the little key in the center of the notch and that should do it. I never changed one after everything went to hell though so I may be missing some steps:)

Make sure to use the proper terminology otherwise you will not get the part you need when you go to get it.

Also its very easy to do without the special little tool.

there's more to than that because there are 2 objects that 360 degress and both need to be set right at the right angle or it will throw a check engine light

I don't know what you mean when you say two things at 360 degrees. Mark where the old CPS(the actual sensor not the syncro) is in relation to to syncro on the manifold or whatever surface you can see easily with white out after that when the motor is at TDC there should be no problem. Its the same as if you just change it before it gives out completely. TDC is TDC regardless of the stupid syncro, it just tells the sensor where the motor is timed at.

Actually, you have to be careful or you will be 180 degrees out of phase. Since it's a rebuild, you have to set it at TDC...both valves closed on #1 cylinder.

The "tool" is just a piece of plastic that holds that key in the center of the slot, not exactly a feet of engineering. Motor at TDC for the compression stroke on number 1 cylinder with the "sensor" in the exact spot it came out and your fine. Hopefully you marked the position of the Cam positioning sensor before you pulled the whole thing out. Just because it chewed the teeth off doesn't mean the sensor postion itself changed and thats the important thing.

thank you guys for the help, its in and locked down and the motor will be going in tomarrow morning.

master brendon: dons auto only had the '98-'06 in shock. mtn. auto got me a 3 pcs. kit for all of the d.i.s. ford motors it was only $26.00, money well spent.

fourwheelford: the cam syncro on a '97 has a completly diffrent than '98-on, all '97-down, needs the tool.
