DIS to TFI swap?

We are working on a 1996 2wd auto with a locked up 3.0 from low oil. Our replacement motor is a 1994 3.0 from a van (astar I assume).

We've got the locked up motor out and on the cherry picker. The replacement is on the engine stand.

I assume if we swap out the oil pan, ignition, motor mounts, and brackets this motor will work?

Are there any how-to guides to follow or has anyone documented a previous quest?

If not what should we look out for? IE: Pitfalls

There is no place for the crank trigger to mount on the 94 motor. Do we swap the timing cover?

Does the 94 have one coil or a coil pack? If the 94 does not use a crank sensor then I assume it is not DIS and you will likely not be able to use your present 96 ECU setup. DIS requires a crank sensor because you need multiple primary switching of the coil packs.

To use your existing 96 ignition (and ECU) you'll need to swap out all the ignition components to the 94.

Sorry I must not understand the abbreviations. I thought DIS was for engines with distributors and TFI was the engines with coil packs.

Ok so the 94 has a single coil and a distributor. The 96 has the crank and cam sensor.

So right now our plan is to take everything off the blocks except the heads and switch it all over. Oil pan, intake, exhaust, sensors, etc.

DIS - distributorless ignition (crank sensor/coil pack)
TFI - ??

Right now you have a 96 ECU that is expecting signals from a crank sensor and other 96 sensors. If you want to use the 94 engine then you need to make sure it has all the sensors the 96 does, as well as a crank sensor and coil pack. If you want to stick with 94 distributor then the 96 ECU will not work.

What's the "trigger"? Sounds like a marketing term not an engineering term. No matter what something has to "trigger" the coil to fire it's secondary. On older vehicles it was mechanical points that grounded (collapsed) the primary then they went to an electronic switch "triggered" by the ECU from a feed back signal on crank position.
