So the other day I traded my old work van (chevy) for a ranger to drive as a DD. Its a 94 2.3L 5 speed 2wd. After driving it like 100 miles im ready to round up parts for a sas 4wd swap. Its runs and drives good. I want to keep the motor for mpg. The 5 speed thats in it in "fresh" and a new cluth so I want to keep it aswell. I know im going to need a donar 4wd 5 speed for the tail shaft and other parts. I want to run a manual 1354 and a dana 30 from a xj. So this is what I was think the specs would end up to be.
-2.3L
-5 speed
-manual 1354
-dana 30 front ford 8.8 rear 4:10

Any and all input from you guys would help. :icon_cheers:

Depeding on what size tires you want to run, you might wanna go a little higher on the gearing if you are planning to keep the 4cyl. Otherwise, I think you are set to go on the swap, and as always, take lots of pictures and post them here. :icon_thumby:

You will need to find a 4wd M5OD. That way, you can bolt the transmission up to your engine without having to swap parts over to your tranmission. With 31's you might wanna go higher for your gearing though, 4.55's at least.

x2 on the gearing. With a 4cyl you would hate 4.10s and 31s. 4.55 or so should be about perfect though.

No flaming... you searched and didnt find your answers. You did one more step than most people would. Yes a 3.0 will have an M5OD behind it.

So any 3.0L 4x4 5 speed will bolt to my 2.3? Will I be able to just keep my clutch from the 2wd or will i need the 4x4 one? If thats the case this is not going to be bad at all! So by the sounds of it im after a donar truck with a 3.0 5 speed and a manual 1354. What years did that combo come in?

Ive been pulling my hair out searching for what info I need and im still lost.:icon_confused: So correct me if im wrong PLEASE. The ONLY 4wd 5 speed tranny that will bolt to a 2.3 is one off of a 2.3? If thats the case what years had this tranny? It would be nice to find a setup with manual 1354 out of the same truck. :iamwithstupid:

i don't see why the 3.0 and 2.3 would have different bolt patterns? idk for sure now, so don't quote me.. but i though they were the same

what's you plan for coils, arms, and things like that?
i'm doing a d30 swap in my b2 soon- gonna do some custom long arms. what's your plan?

4.0L and 2.9L have the same bellhousing pattern, the 3.0L has it's own as do the 4cyls.

But if I'm not mistaken, you can swap bellhousings and use a transmission from a 3.0 or 4.0. I don't think I'd want a 4.0 transmission though, I think it's geared slightly different and probably wouldn't work for your application.

Is this true? So what was the last year they had a manual 1354 on a 3.0? I kinda want one from a 94-97 so all the inside trim and shifter boots will match up and look factory. I think im getting closer to finding out what I need now. I think.. lmao:icon_thumby:

My credo
If you're not making mistakes, you're not learning.
Allright, M5OD stuff:

The bellhousing is cast into the transmission, they don't swap. Each case must be used with it's corresponding engine.

I4 2.3L/2.5L, 2000 and older - own unique pattern
I4 2.3L, 2001 and newer - own unique pattern*
V6 3.0L - own unique pattern
V6 2.9L/4.0L - own unique pattern

*however it's reported that you can use this transmission with the whole duratec engine family, including V6's.

BUT, luckily, the internals are almost exactly the same. 4.0L engines uses a closer ratio gear set, this can be swapped into other housings, as can the wide ratio set be swapped into the 4.0L trans case.

All you would need to convert any M5OD into 4wd should be the rear output shaft, and the rear extension housing for the t-case. Those pieces are reportedly all the same. And I hope they are because I'm putting donor 4.0L M5OD parts into a pre 2000 I4 M5OD.

There is an "HD" version on some newer 4.0L equipped trucks. Everything I have heard is that these are merely upgraded synchro's on 4th/5th gear or something like that. They're not any heavier duty than any other M5OD.

Manual 1354'as are rare, and $$$. Electric 1354's are common and a dime a dozen. Many people are removing the motor and finding ways to shift them manually via cable. Manual 1350's are also a dime a dozen, but require a special front output yoke unless you do other, $$$, modifications. Don't bother with an electric 1350 unless it's free and for parts.

I have researched this extensively. I have actually made part purchases and just need the time to stick the case in, but I'm doing a clutch too, so that adds to the weekend. Stupid truck is just too damn useful!, can't have it down for long.

So I NEED a 2.3 4wd tranny or make one from parts from ANY M5OD? Is their any links on how to convert/make a M5OD 4wd out of a 2wd? Thanks again for all the info guys... I just wish it was as easy as my fullsize ranger... lol Maybe I should just drive it 2wd and finish my other ranger project.
