Howdy,
I'm new on this forum, sorry if this has already been discussed on another thread. I have read up on the engine swaps other guys are doing but I haven't seen where anyone has done the exact swap I am thinking of doing so I wanted to reach out and see if anybody can tell me if this will work of if there is a better option out there for me.

I have a 1987 Bronco II w/ a Manual tranny and the 2.9 engine is starting to give me issues. I am considering swapping the motor out for one that is more powerful and hopefully more reliable. A friend of mine has a 1990 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 in it but it's an automatic. The tranny is ruined in the Ranger but the engine is good. I am wondering if I can pull the 4.0 from his 1990 Auto Ranger and put it in my Manual 1987 Bronco II. Will it bolt up to the manual tranny I currently have? Is this a direct bolt in swap or is it a difficult process that will require additional mounts and adapters etc..

I am also open to other ideas. I am looking to get a more reliable and powerful engine but I don't want to spend a fortune on this old beast so if anybody has any other ideas if the swap i'm considering won't work. Let me know. Or point me to a thread where this exact swap has already been discussed. Thanks guys!

It's bee covered on here plenty but yes, that 4.0 will bolt up to your transmission, mounts, y-pipe etc.

Since you have an 87 you had better be good with wiring though.

The 4.0 will bolt to your existing transmission very easily. It will destroy said existing transmission just as easily.

The 4.0 is not a difficult swap, it is very worth while, but it needs to be done properly to be reliable. The trans in your vehicle barely stood up to the 2.9, it does not hold up to a 4.0.
