Im thinking about calling it quits with the ranger for now, keeping it, just tired of driving it. i like the look of 04 style explorer and i was thinking about picking one up maybe, but i was wondering a few things.

Whats the difference between the 4.0 and the 4.6? (as in gas mileage, and noticeable power differences and such)

What things tend to go wrong that I should look for?

What package should is the best to buy?

and whatever else I oughta know. Thanks

the 4.6 is noticably more powerful in my opinion. both the 4.6 and 4.o are very reliable. things to look for on 4.0: during test drive get under a load at 2500 rpm approx. and listen for timing chain noise sounds like lifter noise. 4.6: check for engine miss. on either check for leaking pinion seals and axle seals. also check valve stems for breakage.

4.6 gets about 4 more MPG on the highway. Keep an eye out for rear wheel bearings. All 4 tend to go out more than they should, but the rears are a bit more common, and a lot harder to deal with. The fronts you just need some good ratchets, axle nut socket, and a hammer/chisel, the rear you need a 15,000 lb press.
