Has anyone ever turboed a 2.9? If so what kind of things did you do? where did you get parts? And pictures are appreciated as well.:icon_hornsup::headbang:

My credo
If you ain't first you're last
The computer is not capable of handling the fueling requirements of a turbo. Only way to do that would to get a stand-alone ecu and wire in the system yourself and tune it from scratch. Or pay someone. Either way is not cheap! Compression ratio is 9:1 so it could potentially handle 10 psi but the bottom would probably give away. There are no forged cranks or pistons that I’m aware of. You’d also have to probably get some manifolds made to mount a turbo to the exhaust and then make some piping and run an inter cooler. You’d have to swap bigger injectors and a walboro 255lph fuel pump.. Sorry to shoot your idea down lol. Best route would be to swap a in a different and better motor...

If you want more power get a 4.0l. If you want a turbo get a 2.3 from a Merkur or mustang

I'm not sure it's quite as impossible as CP says, since lots of people have turbo'd non turbo engines around here. There will be a lot of fab work involved, and frankly I would be more worried about the weak heads than the bottom end.

I do agree with the final conclusion, which is for more power get a 4.0.

There was a mass air ECU for the 2.9 liter for later California emissions trucks. I don't remember the specifics, but James Pringle (aka JP3) turbocharged a 2.9 using a MAF setup. His ran for a while very successfully, but something led to blowing the bottom end. Stuck wastegate comes to mind, but don't hold me to that.

All of this has been many years ago, but you might find references to it online with more detail if you search his username.

I personally was disappointed about how Pakr just left it dangling and dead at the end. But hey, we aren't trying to make the NYT top 100 best sellers list here, now are we?

So I've looked into a lot of stuff and moranav6racing.com offers a lot of stuff for the 2.9s as far as forged bottom end and stage 3 heads. Yes the heads may be the weak points but they can also be studded to make them a bit better. Basically to answer everyone's question I'm not looking for more power and I don't just want a boosted ranger I am genuinely interested in building the 2.9 it's self.

Nice work didn’t know anyone had any interest in building performance parts for the 2.9! In that case if you got money to blow go for it. I would really look into what you’re going to do for engine management, maybe that stock ecu can do it, but I doubt it. And you need to find manifold(s) for the turbo, pretty sure on a v motor it’s going to need to mount the the y pipe so both manifolds feed the turbo.. or twin turbo it. Intercooler and piping should be fairly easy in the grand scheme of things.

Despite what everyone says, with enginuety, a standalone fuel injection system, mechanical turbo and the right manifold. They have these 2.9 cologne blocks STOCK with aftermarket or the 89 tm heads with 400 horse or more
