I bought 11 quarts of mercon v for my 4r55e transmission from autozone. Put in enough to see it on the dipstick and started it. went to add some more, one of the bottles was brown fluid. it looked like used fluid to me. I took all the empty bottles back to our local autozone the other day, they refunded my money for the fluid. I told them how I had just put a new Transmission and Radiator in my truck to remove all foreign contaminants and now i put some of this "mystery fluid" out of their bottle into my transmission. They agreed to cover the cost of a trans flush at my shop of choice.

They then called me back today and told me that this was a issue they had with their supplier and some of the fluid did not have red dye added. Would this make the fluid dark brown instead of a light red?

What would be the BEST fluid to run in my new transmission when I do get it flushed?

Any questions, ideas, and criticism are welcome. I'm always up for learning a little more.

Thanks,
Tom

If the bottle was sealed, it could have been un-dyed (or even mis-bottled motor oil from the factory). If it was not sealed, it's possible it was used stuff that someone returned and they (autozone) didnt catch it. :dunno:

IIRC, most of the "newer" (mid '90's) transmissions used mercon 5.
That's what you want when you get it flushed.

I doubt no dye would make it dark brown. It should make it yellowish or clear I think.

ya, the color kind of threw me for a curve ball. i alto thought it would have been more clear than brown if it was un-dyed. considering the normal looking stuff is a clearish red color.

How is mobile 1 atf for this application?
