This is the one I'm referring to. The newer ones are rectangular and have silver buttons.

I guess as long as you have the proof the car was scraped I guess it would be ok. Some sates have different regulations on things. But, the key is not worth much since it will have to be reprogrammed and if somebody wanted to buy it they would have to worry about getting the dealer to set it up for them and then they will not have any warranty on it since it is used. They could buy a new one as I did for my Corvette and get a warranty.

Crazy lol. Yea there was a little learning curve wrenching on it but in the end its just another car but with aluminum everything and lots and I mean LOTS of sensors for everything. Even the seats will detect if someone is sitting in it so it doesn't deploy the airbag if no one is there. Freaking a pain when tracking down problems. But there's a lot of helpful forums out there and a hell of a lot of how to's since shops charge an arm and a leg for labor. Parts ain't cheap either...
My Brother's M3 is a trip to drive. It has the SMG manual trans, and no clutch pedal. When on a hill and you let off the brake, it rolls backwards until you hit the gas. You can also shift it on the console, or with the paddles on the steering wheel. IIRC, he said you can also just have it shift for you. And I'll tell you what, that little bastard will shit and get. It's a quick little bugger. It is DAMN AWFUL in snow.

I know what you mean about parts too. He bought it wrecked, and at the time you could only buy the parts from the dealer or used - but that may have changed. He was a good 10 grand into making it road worthy again. Luckily one of his friends is a BMW tech.

EDIT: Found a couple pics of it.

Should I put the reciever pin in the first hole or the back hole? And I'm being serious, no jokes! I think the first hole would be stronger but it fits in the second hole better. Wow this really sounds bad!

Yea thought so, it would be to much work to salvage anything off of it. Unless you do tiny soldering work and know a guy with a broken BMW key.

Yea there still not cheap and the parts are still really in demand. plus not sure I trust the JY for this car, it would probably throw the part back at me and laugh. Luckily I haven't needed anything from the jy for it just a lot of maintenance that the PO didn't do. This thing had original everything still like the battery, fuel filter, plugs, etc. at 125,000! I mean really dude?
