I am doing the 4.0L swap and swaping the M50D manual trans. The doner vehicle was a 1998 explorer with auto trans. My final issue is finding a hydraulic line from the master cylinder to the trans. I bought a line from a 1990 ranger but the connection to the trans was not correct. It looked like it would fit with the same design but the male connection was slightly larger and would not connect. The master cylinder end was ok.

What I need is a line from the master cyl which uses a pin to secure the line (from a 1986 B2) and at the other end a connection that fits the 1998 trans. I would be glad to change the master cylinder but when I look at my doner (it has a plate to cover up the hole in the fire wall) the plate is not the same shape as my B2. So a 1998 explorer master cylinder would not fit.

I also see line kits on the internet but I can not tell if they contain the correct connectors.

This is my final roadblock. NEED HELP!

Sounds like it would be easiest to do some fab work and make the 98 master cylinder fit. That way the line will still be a 98 line and if it ever fails, you won't have to find yet another line for this.

Pics would help.

The master cylinders are essentially the same. The only real change is the fitting at the slave. Get a master for a 91 and it should work just fine. That's what I used on my M5 swap.

Or simply get a new master cyl for the '98 or whatever from ford and both the reservor and master to slave lines are included. Oe hit up different yards for the proper master to slave line. PS: You DO NOT want to try to use a used slave.

While that will probably work I chose 91 just because I know for a fact it will work. The slave fitting never changed, but I'm not sure about the way or position that the master mounts.

When I ordered the line from NAPA I got a 90 ranger since the picture did look correct. However the line did not fit the 98 trans slave connection

What year is your slave from?

The important part here is to get a slave and master from the same year, and a year that used the M5OD. I don't know what the 90 looked like for sure (but I have my ideas). I do know that when I did my swap I used the parts from a 91. I also pulled up the pics of the 98 slave on AZ's site, looks the same to me.

This is one of those ones that I could probably figure out really quick if I had the parts physically in front of me. Having a few problems with it as is.

Had the EXACT same problem when I did my M5OD swap. Get a master cylinder for a 93-94 Explorer (88-92 masters LOOK the same, but have different stroke and capacity than what is need for the later slave cylinder, so it will make the clutch holy crappin' stiff, unenjoyable stiff...) and also a hydro line for a 93-4 Explorer. The 90 Ranger line has a slightly shorter quick disconnect fitting so it won't completely clip into the slave.
