I have a 2000 Ranger, 4.0L, 4x4, 4 door. I have this unusual problem that the door chime will continue for about 4 seconds (which is about 4-5 chimes) after I take the key out of the ignition. Sounds normal, right? Here's the kicker, it only happens when I turn the key to run and then off. If I just put the key in and take it out it stops dinging.

I've searched all over the interwebs and can only find either it's on all the time or it doesn't come on at all. I don't want to disable it I just want it to work like it should. I've checked all my contacts in the ignition and the door switch and they all work fine.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Not sure why it would do that.

The seat belt system only has power with key on, and it is also connected to same warning chime.
It could be key off is causing that system to chime for a few seconds.
Try keeping seat beat buckled and turn key from RUN to OFF

Could be parking light circuit, it also activates chime if lights are left on, power detected at GEM with key off, could be something in that circuit is holding power after key is turned off and GEM runs chime until power drains.

An air bag could do that as well, they store power, seat belt system

Could be GEM has a fault

Someone else on another forum suggested the seat belt thing. I tried recreating the scenario with the seat belt engaged and I had the same results.

I have noticed that the led coming off the GEM module has been staying on and my truck no longer honks when I lock the door (a signal that the alarm is engaged). I wonder if the two are related.

It could also be the ignition tumbler itself

Yes, it all points to GEM, being it is a final say on chime on/off or duration

RAP(remote personality) module is what responds to Keyless entry fobs.
It interfaces with GEM for door lock/unlock but has its own separate Horn Relay activation wire, as well as parking light relay control wire

I know on most(well all) of my Keyless entry vehicles I have the option of turning off the horn honk on lock or unlock, so you don't disturbed neighbors or whatever, but the option is there
But I don't have a Ranger with RAP module to test that

How so?

I mean, ive never tore apart a tumbler to find out why, but i do know they can get sloppy and fool it into thinking the keys in. Granted, these were on 92-96 style F series, not 100% sure if its possible on yours, but maybe an avenue to explore.
