OK quick background.......Truck ran fine yesterday.....Drove into garage last night after working on interior.....Went to back the truck out today to work on it and the battery was dead....Pulled my other truck up behind it to start it....hooked up the cables then went around to turn the key on to start it....warning lights on dash were very dim.....was getting ready to shut the key off to let it charge some when I hear a pop and see smoke in the area of the battery.....and a orange glow....run over and unhook the cables and access the damage. One of the wires coming off the power side of the solonoid had the cover melted off for about 2 inches down the wire. The wire starts out as orange then changes to Black with an orange stripe. Traced the wire across the core support across the inner fender and through the firewall. I looked up under the dash and it looked like the wire went to the headlight switch. So I figured it was just the main power for the headlights. So I cut the wire where it was burnt and removed the other piece from the solonoid and put in a different battery that wasn't dead.. But even with the other battery when I turn the key on I have no power.

My question is does the fuse block or ignition pull power through the wire also? Or is it possible that I have something else going on?

Sorry for so long a post. Any information would be great.

Thanks in advance.

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
That Black/Orange wire splits at a splice over on the driver's side fender, with a Yellow wire coming off it which supplies the ignition switch. There's more fusible links there; sounds like more than the one link that you fixed may have burned up. When a fusible link blows, you should replace the link instead of just splicing the wire around it. Otherwise the circuit is no longer protected against shorts.
