i was in the process of replacing the seals on my dana28 becuase there was no fluid in it. and i thought the seals were bad. as i was checking to see how i would take the seals off, i came across a crack on the right side of it. got any ideas how i should fix this? or is there fixxing it? i have cleaned a spot off to make sure that it was a crack and it sadly is, just didnt have a picture of it sorry. Thanks in advance!

Do you know were i could find a new housing for it and just move the gears over to the new one? Or would that be a bad idea? Do you got an idea what i could put in a 84 ford ranger?

Find out what gear ratio you have and find another d28 pumpkin or swap in a d35, beams and all, with the same gear ratio. There are ways to fix cracks like that but the labor charges would be way more than a used one and probably more than a new one.

Spring hill florida. I know of some junkyards but idk if theh will have either d28 ord35. Will any others fit 84 ranger? Got an idea how much a d35 would cost? And would i have issues putting a d35 in the place of the d28? Tcase issues shaft issues or something? Nvm i think theres a thing for d28 to d35 swap on here somewhere. But any information would be awesomly appreciated! Thank you!

There is a "Tech Articles" section in the upper left of the TRS bar at the top of your screen, go to the axle section and check out the D35 swap stuff.

Basically your driveshaft will be an inch too long and you will need the steering linkage too. And after all that (assuming the balljoints and stuff are good) you will need an alignment.

If you don't beat on it and have stockish sized tires, just find another D28 housing with the same gearing and switch them out. No need to swap the gearing.

I have a line on one for $75 with non-matching gearing.

Out of a yard will vary, they may charge you for the brakes, steering, hubs... things that are usually considered "part of the axle"

A couple of years ago I bought front d28 and rear 7.5" axles with 4.10 gears for $200.00.

I found my 4.10 d35 in a junkyard. Probably took 3 hours to pull it, but it was worth the hassle. I paid about $150 for the complete axle, hub to hub. The biggest thing you'll need is a 1-1/8 socket, breaker bar and cheater pipe. Everything else is just basic tools.

If you don't have a great need to upgrade to the d35, you may be better off finding a new d28 center section. Lots of people upgrade, so the smaller stuff is out there cheap.

okay. awesome, i got quite a bit of tools so i should have everything i need then. luckily i even have a 1-1/8 socket. i dont have a need to upgrade, but theres no point in buying a d28 now, and in a few months get a d35 if i want to upgrade. kinda wasting money. but im gona try to find a 35 first off. i checked a few junk yards close by a while back and none of them had any 4x4s. the other one which is like an hour away, had a couple. and even then idk which dana it was. im hoping its a d35. knowing my luck it wont be. do you know what other danas will be able to fit in a ranger? with/without modifacations? thank you!

1st gen 4x4 explorers are all D35 TTB yet finding one with 4.10s (if thats what you want) is nearly impossible from one of those. Late '90+ RBV are all D35 but some '93-'97 Rangers that weren't 4.0 had whats called a hybrid 35 which is basically a D35 axle with D28 gears..

i might as well get the same gear ratio soi dont mess anything up. the d28 i got is a 3.43 gear ratio, and from what i've read, they should be fairly easy to find (hopefully). i read about the hybrids as well. okay thank you for the info!
