I am sure this has been asked and answered but am unable to find the answer.

I am having a heck of a time up here in North Central MN finding a tranny to use for my Ranger.
I have a 1992 Ranger Super Cab 4x4 2.9 V6.
I see in the attached chart they had M5OD for the 4.0/2.9 and the 3.0.

If I was able to find a 3.0 or 4cyl 4x4 M5OD will that match the bell housing for my 2.9?

Thanks for your time.

No. the 4.0 and the 2.9 have the same bell housing bolt pattern. I believe the 2.8 does too but the m5od transmission never came behind it.

Only the B4000 will match, it had the 4.0l engine, 1994 was first year in US
B2300 has 2.3l, B3000 had 3.0l, they won't match.

M5OD-R1 is the kind of transmission it is, internally
It was used in these vehicles:
1988–2011 Ford Ranger
1988–1990 Ford Bronco II
1988–1995 Ford Aerostar
1991–2000 Ford Explorer

The case for the M5OD, which includes the part that bolts to the back of the engine, came in different designs, specific to the engine it would be mounted to.
Same for your A4LD, it will only bolt to a 2.9l or 4.0l engine, it couldn't be used with 2.3l or 3.0l engine

You need one from a 2.9l or 4.0l engine

2x4 or 4x4 matters as well, they have different tail shafts and tail shaft housings, the 2x4 or 4x4 tail shaft and housing can be swapped from one M5OD-R1 to another M5OD-R1 regardless of "engine type"
But not from your A4LD to an M5OD

M5OD-"R1" was used in light duty trucks, like Rangers and Explorers
M5OD-"R2" was use in full size trucks, it is a larger transmission

Thanks for the good information. As I understand it my transfer case does swap over from my A4LD 4wd to a M5OD 4wd or am I misunderstanding that information.

Yes, automatic or manual trans didn't matter, they both used same transfer case.

2x4 or 4x4 mattered because transmission tail shaft was different so 4x4 trans could bolt to transfer case
