To be precise the difference is 0.0024", smaller than the production tolerances of most wrenches or sockets.
8mm = 0.3149"
5/16" = 0.3125"
So the difference is actually less than 1%

Haha, perfect. Also I got them off with an 8mm combination wrench. Learned the double wrench trick to get the torque I needed.
Was putting the fuel rail and upper intake plenum on this evening when I realized that the machine shop that rebuilt the motor put the valve covers on the wrong sides. I'm kind of embarrassed that I didn't notice until the upper intake plenum bumped the oil filler spout. Finally, I thought: hm that shouldn't be there.
EDIT: I'm collecting items for my break-in. I got 5 quarts of high zinc 'race oil', and a couple oil filters. I want to get a real temp and oil pressure gauge while I'm at it. I'll be searching the forums but let me know if you have any recommendations.
