2010 Ranger FX4 rear axle with 8.8 and 4.10 gears. Got water in the rear diff and caused some wear cause after replacing bearings and cleaning it out it now howls like cat in heat. Will replacing ring and pinion solve the howling or will the axle shafts have to be replaced also? What years were the 8.8 with 4.10 used so I can find one at a salvage yard?

My credo
If you're not making mistakes, you're not learning.
Did you take the pinion out? and did you check the backlash before and afterwards?

Axle shafts don't cause howl.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I had some howling in the back of my truck today.

Found the source...

It's not the axel shafts it would be bearings or the ring and pinion if you have a gopro or a camera with a mic secure it to the bottom of your truck as close to the center section and take it for a ride then do the same thing closer to the wheel bearings that will at least help you narrow down the source of the noise so your not throwing money at parts that don't need to be replaced
