Coming in second just makes you the first loser!
So, I have had this squealing belt issue for a while now. I put on a new belt, no change. Put in new idler and tensioner pulleys, no change! Tries lubing the bearings on the pulleys, belt conditioner, a different belt, all with no change. Yesterday the belt fell off. While putting it back on I noticed that the alignment from the tensioner pulley to the harmonic balancer was way off! I then realized the pulley on the harmonic balancer had slid back about 1/2 inch! After doing some research on how to replace it, I found that a lot of other people have had the same issue. I was also having an "over heating" problem I thought was due to the thermostat housing but apparently it all started with this! While changing the thermostat housing I installed an electric fan and had no more over heating issue since, just the squealing. But where the harmonic balancer was broken, the original clutch fan was not turning as fast, nor was the water pump, causing the issue. So, if you have a belt squealing and over heating issues, check your harmonic balancer!

+1 to that :)

Also if you have a squealing belt it also means all the pulleys are getting Glazed(shiny spots) each time you hear a squeal.
So if you put on a new belt it will hit those Glazed spots and...........squeal....WTF a new belt?

Fan belt works on friction, shiny spots are like ice is for your tires, less friction, lol.
So before putting on that new belt, scuff up the pulleys with Emory cloth or sand paper, a good coat of paint on the pulley surface is also good.
Friction is you friend with fan belts

Yeah, the balancer separating on the 4.0 SOHC is a known issue. There are solid ones out there.

I had the squealing on my 98 3.0 years ago. A new belt fixed it. But that was later after I also replaced the tensioner, as it no longer aligned with the rest of the pulleys. And it tossed a belt while in traffic. Man! When you toss a belt the temperature goes up FAST! Turned off the ac, turned on the heater full bore, and still it was almost maxed out before I got it off the road and shut down. :shok:

I went with a solid one! The replacement part (sold by most parts stores) seemed very cheaply made! I ordered one online instead. Paid almost twice as much but now I feel good about what's on there. Pulled all the pulleys off and painted/scuffed them before putting it all back together. :icon_thumby:
