transfer case questions

couple of things on m5od trans and 1354 transfer case

1 is there a seal for the rear shaft on trans between trans and transfer case?

2 how involved is it to replace speedo worm gear in transfer case and what parts would be needed? could it be fixed in a hotel room?

3 where would be a good place to get parts? (also needs 19 tooth pink gear on cable)

There is no seal on the trans. The gasket between the trans and t-case keeps the fluid from leaking on the ground.

The worm gear is not hard to replace. You need the gear, and the output seal for the t-case. As the gear can be replaced with the case in the truck I would do it in the hotel parking lot rather than the hotel room.

Aside from the dealership I don't know of anywhere to get the gears.

The worm gear cannot be accessed from inside the transfer case, so taking it out and pulling it all apart is pointless. What you do it drop the driveshaft, remove the output flange and seal, and then the worm gear comes out the back.

t case needs to come down already to fix leak. can i use silicon to seal?

for the worm gear is that the rear drive shaft that needs to be dropped? (if so i would assume rear output flange and seal)

There is a SEAL on the tailshaft of the 4x4 M5OD-R1 transmission.

IF memory serves correctly it is a Federal-Mogul P/N 1979 seal.

There was really little need for it other than keeping the oil in the transmission during transport and installation.

The problem comes from the fact that there is a sipe groove in the tailshaft mating surface against the transfer case... On my own transmission I drilled and tapped a 1/4-20 hole in the groove and glued an aluminum bolt into that hole, cut it off flush with the gasket surface and filed it smooth.... but a nice glob of silicone would serve the same purpose...

The reason I sealed it up is because Should that seal fail (a common failure) the oil that finds its way into that void chamber between the trans & T-case has an escape, it dribbles on the ground and is lost forever. if the oil is not allowed to leak out that chamber will
only accumulate 8-12oz of fluid then the oil will stop accumulating.

I personally had a transmission that leaked it's entire load of oil overboard in a few hours... (literally the time it took me to drive from Allentown to Trenton and back...

already did cleaned and lubed it

also replaced speed sensor (mainly because of leaks)

new worm gear is a 7 tooth and speedo drive is yellow 18 tooth ...how ever now speedo reads between 7 and 10 mph fast.. im thinking a 20 or 21 tooth speedo drive would put it right. what do you think?

tire height is 28.9"/9.3/15 (235/75/15) diff is 3.73
