Manual says, engine must be removed to get oil pan off 4x4 Ranger, 1999?

Is this the only way?

probably your best and safest way. you could always jack the engine just high enough. but you may already half way out of the engine bay.

I have done it with the transmission out and just undid the motor mounts and jacked up the engine. Be careful of the distributor or the cam sensor which ever you have. It is still a real pain in the ass getting the engine high enough to get the pan to clear the oil pick up and the axle but it can be done. If you are not doing the rear main seal and don't have the trans out I would drop the axle.
