I am Thinking about swapping out my 7.5" rear for a 8.8". But what I want to do is use a Ranger 8.8 instead of an Explorer one, As far as I can tell it would be a direct bolt in.

So is it that simple and how hard would it be to find one?

It's that simple.

As for difficulty finding one, that is a regional issue. Start hitting the yards.

Up here it all depends on which ratio you want. I've found the 3.73 to be the rare one. Just go to car-part.com to find one near you. Make sure you get one with the 10" brakes.

Look for 4.0L Rangers, that's the only guaranteed source of them...

Is the explorer harder to swap?

The explorer axle is a tougher swap as shock mounts and leaf spring pads need to be welded on, but it's a better axle if that isn't an issue :)

Only the FX4 level 2 trucks had a 31 spline axle, and they're rare and if you break a shaft you're kinda screwed as they're different than the Explorer shafts...
