Ok so I swapped in an 06 sohc into my 98 Mazda b3000 I rewired the PCM harness so everything lined up. But I recently found out that the 06 doesn't have a gem module at all so I bought a 99 explorer sohc PCM but wouldn't start it would turn over but not start. So my question o electrical gurus is what can i do to get that 99 PCM to work

Your 99 PCM has PATS. Your 98 B3000 (I guess it's a B4000 now) does not. The computer isn't getting the security system go-ahead to enable the fuel and ignition systems that it wants to see.

You would need the antenna and PATS module to enable the system, or find a computer that didn't have the security system.

Also, the 06 did in fact have a GEM. You didn't find it because it wasn't called a GEM in 2006. It was called a Smart Junction Box (or SJB) and had the interior fuse panel integrated into it.

If you take it to someone who does aftermarket tuning you could.

Ford's scanner has no provisions for deactivating the security system. You can't even use it to disable the system and start the vehicle if the PATS system is broken.

Beats me, in my mind it's easier to just put the rest of the system in. Probably cheaper too.

Best bet is to go get it from the original PCM donor. After that I would head to a junk yard.

If you can't get the original parts from the PCM donor, and it's keys, you will need to get it to a dealership, have a Parameter Reset and two keys programmed.

Looks pretty simple. Power and ground for the PATS module, tap it into the HS can lines, and then run the 4 wires for the antenna.

The old keys should start it if held near the antenna while the key that works the ignition is turned.

I suppose that eventually you would want to get new keys made that fit the lock, but strictly speaking you wouldn't NEED to, if you can recover all the parts of the original matched set.

My credo
If you ain't first you're last
Hey I know this is a dead thread but I got an issue completely opposite. I swapped In a 98 4.0 into my 99 ranger and I'm worried about the dealer being able to reprogram the computer/pats stuff because there were no pats in 98. My theft light blinks with the new key in. How could I bypass the pats, and correct me please if I'm wrong about 98's not having pats.

Can I just pull my pats junk out?

The junkyard has already crushed the ranger I got the PCM from so no getting it's steering column

I don't have a y pipe in yet so I haven't started the truck, just seen if it turns over.
