Check battery voltage with key OFF
12.8v is newer battery
12.5v is 3 year old battery
12.3v is 5 to 6 year old battery and time to shop for battery sale

12.2v or less is a "done" battery, can't hold enough AMPs any more

Start engine
Battery Voltage should now show above 14v but below 14.9volts
That should last less then 5 minutes at idle, over 10min is failing voltage regulator or battery(recheck battery voltage key off, after it sits for 4 hours, if voltage is dropping then battery has internal short)

After the 5min, you should see under 14v, 13.5-13.8v, voltage regulator has switched over to maintenance charge, keeps battery's available AMPs stable without over charging it

No, 14.3v won't kill a battery.............unless its AC volts
Switch meter over to AC Volts and see

Alternators generate AC Volts in the 3 Field Coils, this AC Voltage is changed to DC volts by Diode sets for each Field Coil, there can be an internal failure that can send out AC volts instead of DC volts, although it is rare its not unheard of
