I just bought a 98 Ranger supercab 4wd 3.0 manual transmission XL truck.

There is a wire sticking out from the transfer case. Included is a pic. What is this supposed to go to?

Also I noticed one wheel free spins and the other turns the axle shaft when I spin it. I suspect there is a problem with that one. It does not have manual locking hubs so I suspect it's an automatic locking hub problem. Any links on how to fix it?

The infamous brown wire.

It needs to go to the plug for the shift motor, on the motor side. It is for a magnetic clutch inside that spins up the front drive components for a smoother engagement while moving.

As for any possible hub issues, your truck has PVH hubs, which are beyond help. They have many common failure points.

Thank you! I best someone changed the motor before and didn't bother to hook it back up.

The hub had the lock clip off. I put it on and seems better now.

Yeah, the motor was probably changed out by someone who couldn't figure out how to take the connector apart.

It probably should have been it's own connector, but this was built near the beginning of Ford thinking all their vehicles would be dealers serviced forever.

My connector doesn't have the Bronx wire or the female pin so I need the one that goes into the connector so I can connect the brown wire to it. Ideally it would have a few inches of wire. Really any connector with a little wire from a bad motor would be great!

Ok, so you need the side on the motor connector. I was interested more because I know that wasn't always there but I don't remember when it started, and I was just making sure that the harness side was in there. If it wasn't in the harness side it may have been that someone swapped in a later t-case.

It doesn't stay with the motor, you have to take it out of the connector shell and move it to the new one every time you swap motors out.

Let me dig through the garage tomorrow, I probably have a pin somewhere that will work for you. I have several wiring harnesses and that was a common plug.

Not yet. Wife has been out of town and the kids have been less than cooperative.

She gets back today, so I should be able to make her watch them for 10 minutes while I go look.
